I need to make a large GRP bonnet scoop for my TVR Tasmin Race car. At the moment it just has an ali scoop that we made in 30 minutes in the pits at Silverstone. Its a bit rough...er no, its not that good.

How do I go about making one. I have never made anything in GRP before. I was thinking about modeling the shape out of foam, then laying on the glass and resin. Can anybody give me a blow by blow account of how I should be doing it?

Thanks in advance.

Modeling clay (plasticine) is easy to work with, but can be a bit messy wink

Make a mould of the scoop you have, if it's rough then use filler to make it as you want it and then paint it with gloss. You then need to use lots of polish and release agent on it before a layer of gel coat then matting and resin. make sure you make it fairly strong so it doesn't break as you try and release it. Make sure the mould is smooth, filling if needed. Making the actual scoop is the same, lots of polish and release agent followed by gel coat and then matting and resin.
Or you could do what I do and get one of the best GRP men in the country to make stuff for me.

Have a look on youtube, there are quite a few GRP mould making tutorials. Watch a fair few and you should pick up a few tips and what to expect.

A quick Google shows loads for sale at around fifty quid, might be cheaper and less hassle than making one.

Hi BG, Long time no see. Thanks for that but all standard ones for sale are all too small in one way or another.
