Will shortly be picking up a 2005 low mileage Impreza, metallic gray, no obvious paintwork problems. Car has been and will be garaged.

I've always been a keen washer/polisher of my cheapo cars, using cheapo products.

What initial and ongoing treatment would people suggest for the new one?

As a scooby owner and full time detailer i would suggest if the car has no or few swirl marks take a look at the Zaino product range.

Firstly buy two buckets with grit guards. Then buy two wash mitts, one for the upper body and a second one for the wheels and lower body. Buy a decent shampoo, a good drying cloth, not a chamois, a couple of microfibres and a decent wax plus applicators.

What you want to avoid are visible swirl marks. A good coats or three of wax every eight to ten weeks will protect the paintowrk and for a staring kit the above is not bad, without spending silly money.
