Say I have an old snotter - and I don't care much for the looks - is it advisable to slap on some rust proof primer for an extended period of time, just to prolong the bodywork throughout a wet winter or something? The car is a very reliable runabout but I don't want to spend a lot of time on the car, just maybe prevent some rot in the future. Is the paint a (short) long term solution?

yes prime the repaired areas but unfortunatley primer is porus which will let rust through so maybe a quick dusting over with a aerosol in which ever colour the car along with some aerosol laquer if your not to botherd about the looks.

Aerosol , im afraid aint worth a tug , as they are sh*t .
Even if prepping for a short life its best to use a rust kill liquid , then a 2 pack primer , then a 2 pack top coat ...
