Hi folks.

I have a feeling that there's some rust forming from the inside of one of my wheel arches. I am tempted to attack it myself, but want to get some advice on the best way forward.

I haven't yet investigated in depth, but I am hopeful that I have caught it early enough to not require cutting out. However, the paint is beginning to bubble on the outside, so I'm going to have to go at this from both sides I reckon. I plan to do the following:

Inside
  • remove arch trim (plastic) - not sure how but I'll figure it out;
  • sand back to bare metal to remove all surface rust;
  • clean surface;
  • key surface (wire wool too extreme?);
  • rust treatment - see later;
  • layer of paint
  • ??? need I do any more (the repair won't be seen).
Outside
  • sand back to bare metal to remove all surface rust;
  • clean surface;
  • key surface;
  • apply kurust to bare metal;
  • leave for a few hours;
  • 1 or 2 coats of hammerite smooth anti-rust primer;
  • smooth down then key primer (1500 grade?);
  • spray 3 or 4 thin coats of matched base paint;
  • leave for a few hours for paint to dry;
  • clear-coat (2 coats).
Then give it a week or so and then have it polished up.

Does this sound like the right way to approach this? What rust treatment should I consider for the inside of the wheel arch? Is Kurust enough? Or should I be trying to source a small pot of POR-15? Would a final coat of waxoil on the inside be of any use (on top of the treated metal perhaps instead of paint)?

Though there's no sign of rust on the other wheel arches, I'd probably be as well doing the same to them too - maybe not taking back to the bare metal but at least applying waxoil.

Maybe I've got this all wrong, which is why I'm asking. I could take the car to a body shop to get it done professionally, and I possibly will, but I wouldn't mind at least considering doing it myself. Any and all advice welcomed...

Cheers!

you have it pretty much spot on right....what car out of interest?
be generous with the anti rust stuff!
i would go the clean, anti-rust, paint route rather than waxoil personally
several layers of paint on inside too.
