Hi, I've had a long standing problem with my car. (BMW 5 Series e39).

I get a persistent clunk whenever the car goes over a bump, that appears to come from the latch area of a rear door. I've checked the hinges for tightness, also removed the door pad to check that nothing is loose inside the door.
I think the striker plate needs adjusting. I've played with it and adjusted it upwards a touch, but this does not appear to have helped.

Any advice would be appreciated. Am I on the right track, or should I be looking elsewhere? Also, am I right in thinking that the door should ride up slightly as it latches onto the striker plate?

Thanks in advance

dont think the door should ride up when the latch engaged, will just make it more difficult to close.
go by swage-lines on door/rear-wing to see if door is aligned properly.

Have a look at the check strap (the thing that stops the door opening too far), they often get worn and can rattle. The problem is you need to look at it when the door is closed, so the best way is to take the door trim off, sit in the car and shut the door then put your arm inside the door and feel for any slack on the check-strap.

Cheers guys.

I will try some more tweaking and examine the check strap.
