Several years ago, I bought this synthetic chamois. It is quite simply brilliant, but it is now wearing out. I do not know what make or type it is. Does anyone recognise it? as I cannot find another like it anywhere.

I have tried some others, all of them quite useless, none of them absorb much liquid, and they just spread and smear the wetness across the panel. And please don't mention towels, I have tried several of those too, utterly useless.

From left to right, Autoglym, Halfords Easy Glide, Zymol, traditional leather chamois, and my old faithful.

My old faithful wipes a totally clear and dry path across the panel, with no smearing or dragging. The panel is left bone dry. None of the others can do this.

Do yourself a favour and buy a drying towel there much safer for your paintwork.

you mention that you don't like microfibre drying towels, which ones have you tried and did you wash them out a few times before using them? if you did what did you wash them with? this can stop them working to their full potential.

I had one last ditch attempt with towels, I bought two Meguairs waffle weave towels. The first one to take the bulk of the water off (with repeated wringing out) and then the second one I figured I would use less saturated, to dry off with.

I am finding towels, and the other chamois, to be unfit for purpose. At least, using my old faithful whatever it is, as a reference/comparison point.

Thanks so far, will check out that P21 that was mentioned.

I thought that too, but it must be long discontinued. I bought an Autoglym one recently, the one with the pin holes in it, just as useless as the others.

The Halfords 'easy glide' gets the award for being totally the opposite of what it says on the label, it welds itself to the panel more so than any of the others and won't budge biggrin

At least the towels pass gently and softly over the car.

ah the megs water magnets are pretty pants. the best drying towel i've found so far is the mothers one. it's really thick and super absorbant. only downside is they're about £18 each! poorboys waffle weave drying towels are pretty good. I'm due to change my towels and will be giving the Dodo ones a try. I've heard very good things about them.

Call Elite car care and ask them what ones valet magic use its a thin waffle weave towel but i cant think of the name and if you dont like it ill buy it off you as i know they are awesome
Also a tip with a drying towel is to spray a very light coat of water or Megs LT if you have any as this helps with the drying.

another thing is to sheet the car with an open end of a hose before drying as this will help to get more water off the car rather than just rinsing with a pressure washer.

yup megs lt does a great job of helping to dry too.

The problem with most of the synthetic chamois is that they appear to be this yellow PVA stuff, they are like a large flat thin sponge, but with a skin on either side, much like the skin on cold yellow custard. The skin either clings to the panel through surface tension, or when it does wipe, it leaves behind a path just like if you had wiped the panel with a flat plastic bag, it just spreads/smears the water rather than lifting/absorbing it and leaving the panel dry.

I have bought a couple more today, that appear to be more like my old rag, rather than the PVA ones that are so prevalent. One is a Halfords Premium Microfibre Chamois, the other is a Car Plan Triplewax Synthetic Car Cloth (but it looks a bit rough and it's tiny too).

Will see how I go, and will have another try with the towel recommendations too.

Thanks so far.

Pretty sure it's this one.

Looks the same as mine at home, doesn't have perforations. I've found them to be brilliant, need proper washing or replacing every once in a while though as they get dirty.

If you want a chamois, the p21s (as seen in the above pic) is the best ive ever used, but i just use towels now.

Indeed but sometimes I just don't have the time and a quick flick over is all I can manage.

Also after popping in to Halfords the other week the Autoglym one has now changed to some nasty perforated thing.
