scratched and pitted windscreen

Can any body help? I was driving at dusk into the sun this week and visibility was almost nonexistent due to the scratches and pitting on my 1968 porsche windscreen, not a pleasant experience on the M25 during the rush hour. Is there any way these can be polished out, would prefer to do it myself if possible if not I'll just have to put my hand in my pocket.
