Hope the thread title doesn’t indicate I have a clue what I'm talking about because I don't.

I have seen a few start to finish detailing photo diaries of a few cars on here and they all start with covering the car in a thick white foam which I assume is some kind of detergent and gently pressure washing off, which would seem in my ignorant but logical mind a good idea, and less harsh than starting with a sponge and bucket of fairy liquid.

So too my question can you buy this kind of 'high foaming' gloop in the real world or is it a specialist thing?

Or am I completely wrong in which case can you just tell me how you all/the best way to clean the initial 'dirt' off the car before you set about the polishing.

Thank you.

I'm new to this also and asked a smilier thing a few months ago. having already got a small ( i mean small) pressure sprayer I bought this:
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washing-and-drying/f...

and this

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washing-and-drying/v...

works a treat.

and from what I have been told this removes crap and surface stuff from the car/bike without having to use a sponge ( don't use a sponge use a lambs wools/microfiber cloth)

For a really dirty car many people use 'snowfoam'. A number of companies supply this which when mixed with hot water in the dispenser bottle plus foam lance enable you witha pressure washer to snowfoam your car.

This will over a five minute period lift off some, not all of the dirt from your paintwork, before you pressure wash off and then hand wash the car using the two bucket method plus grit guards.

Snowfoam is a useful tool to have if you have a pressure washer but is not the 'Holy Grail' of getting your car really clean.

Snow foam is an alternative to the pre-wash stage of car care, designed to remove the bulk of grime attached to the wax/sealant or bare paintwork, if there's none on it.
It will, used at correct dilution strength, preserve the wax/sealant, and leave only the finer grime that is known as traffic film.
This leaves less for your wash mitt to deal with, so should cut down on the amount of swirls you can inflict on the paint.

The other approach is a garden sprayer (pressurised) with an LSP-safe solution sprayed on, then hosed or pressure rinsed off - not quite as fully effective as snow foam is, but better than just rinsing and then throwing the mitt over the car.

The best foam on the market is Bilt Hamber Auto-foam, and to get the best from it, you need to do some maths which works out using your foam lance on the end of your pressure washer, at 2-5% strength.
