Someone split wife's front bumper in a car park just before Xmas. It's c2-3 ins just under the headlamp on an MX5.

Invited local Chips Away guy to take a look today and have been quoted 125 ex vat to repair. Wife reports that the repair came with all sorts of caveats that it would split again if knocked etc.

This doesn't sound like a good deal, on the face of it. Has anyone any experience of these types of repair, and if so what are your thoughts - are there any repair systems which might be better than the one CA plan to use, for example?

Which one is your ChipsAway operator going to use?

Cold weld? Hot weld with mesh? GRP backing?

Any of those manage a pretty durable repair to a small split.

Just filling over the crack will look pretty for a short while but is very likely to split again as soon as the area is stressed again.

Not all ChipsAway businesses include the trim repair module, which includes plastic welding - hot weld with mesh. Many experienced operators will use other weld options when most suitable.

Find out a bit more about exactly what process is being considered.

£125 is quite a good price for a weld and refinish repair in this part of the country - but there are regional variations.
