The wheels on my Bimmer were/are embarrassing. Haven't been cleaned for months. With the state of the roads, salt and grit it didn't seem worthwhile but I'm regretting it now.
Took one off to clean it today. Good soak then a spray with Chemical Guys Wheel & Rim Cleaner (twice) and a claying. Still have nasty black roughness IYSWIM.
Before I set about them with sandpaper and/or scotchbrite what should I do?

Buy some Bilt Hamber Surfex HD, dilute to around 5:1 water to HD and leave fo a few minutes on the wheels.....then rinse.

May be worth buying some more aggressive clay or giving them a good going over with something like Carlack 68, which will remove additional grime / brake dust etc.

Excuse the plug, but our Mellow Yellow concentrate (get this not the ready to go spray) is about as tough as it gets as a wheel cleaner, used usually for restoring wheels. You can leave to dwell a while if required for more stubborn marks. Then you need to rinse thoroughly and apply a solvent tar/glue remover. This is because some of the contamination could be tar not ferrous deposits.

Then use a clay bar, and finally a toothpick/detailing stick for the nooks/crannies/creases if dirt remains.

Finally, seal the wheel.

You should then be able to wash it with a normal shampoo if you wash the car regularly, until the sealant wears off, or at least use a diluted wheel cleaner solution.
