I acquired a (very) cheap MG ZT-T last month. It was cheap because the paint needs some loving. Getting a pro in is out of the question as that would equate to 25%-30% of the purchase price so I wonder how much damage I can do if I give it a go myself. Here's what we are dealing with:

So I have a random orbital sander - is this any use to me? If so, what else do I need?

Spend some time on detailingworld or on Autopia.com. Both these sites have videos showing the best way to correct clearcaots, blemishes, scratches etc and what foam pads, chemicals etc to use.

Do it gently and slowly. What have you got to loose? Not even the cost of the car. And it may make it look worth a thousand $$$$$

Can recommend Detailing World, some nice chap called Chicken Pox The Apprentice has put the links to useful threads guides together, although that was a while ago, either way the guides are good. If you have a search you'll probably find same car as yours to help get pads/polish/cleansers etc start with least aggressive polish/pad combo etc etc better yet see if you can get along to one of their meets

ETA this would be the thread (assuming doesn't break any PH rules:
