I have a 1997, 993 which I wash and wax myself. Clay , once a year etc. I love it.

I also have a silver Nissan Presage ( 7 seater MPV - not available in UK) which I have only washed once since I bought it new ~ 2 years ago. I dont really care about this car and it already has parking scratches on both sides. I only want to prevent rust. I do not care about the cosmetic appearance and do not want to spend a lot. When I sell it in a few years time, I'll factor in a respray.

Rather than touch up paint, can I just apply a thin layer of laquer/sealant and forget about it. On the lighter scratches, do I even have to do this if I'm only concerned about rust prevention.

A thin smear of Vaseline on the scratches will prevent rust if that's all you wish to do.
