I am new to cleaning my car properly(2 buckets etc..) I have been trying to do all I can to keep the light scratches and swirls down, but I have always used that cream coloured, square mesh looking cloth, to polsh my cars, but that can't be good for the paint??!?

What should I be using?

Thanks in advance.

No cloth at all - foam pad.
When you say polish, you mean abrasive or the old generic term for waxing?
If the latter, then soft foam applicator.
If the former, what car is it, and what polish?

I have Autoglym ultra deep shine, and I own a TVR S3.

That's a sealant - a round yellow Meguiar's applicator or their own hand applicator pad and a couple of soft microfiber cloths to buff it off with.
Your local Halfords should have them, although the microfibers will undoubtedly be better quality online.

One solution to both is if you swapped UDS for Bilt Hamber Hydra-wax - you'd get a more durable protection layer, as well the applicator and microfiber cloth.
Have a look on www.bilthamber.com

Not used UDS purely because of the horror stories I have been told, so I wont comment on its performance...colour of car would be a good starting point if you were to need advice...but for waxing and sealing you need some fluffy microfibre cloths, you can get them online at most detailing supplies....and as you say the "mutton" cloth that you have been using is not good....if you are looking at creating the best look for your motor have a chat with a detailer who will talk you through it....
