Due to living in a second floor apartment i have no easy way of washing my car, other than to go to the local garage and do it that way.

Is it okay to give the car a wash, drive a few miles home, then dry it before starting to clay, polish and wax?

I'm thinking about how much crap i could pick up on the few mile journey home, and whether this would be detrimental to drying etc at home. Perhaps i'd be better drying the wash at the car wash?

Depends on how bad it is.
You could opt for the rinseless wash in the form of Optimum No Rinse or other green/eco "waterless" washes.
If the car's particularly dirty, then you could use the garage to soap & pressure rinse, leave the brush, then use the ONR back at home.
Another is the Mobi unit, but I've never used one, so no idea how effective it is.

It would probably pay for itself in a year of not using a petrol station jetwash.

Why not get a valeter to pop around and do the job for you. A full detail twice a year and a wash every three weeks should be OK. You can then QD the car and do the windows etc yourself.
