Hi All,

I plan to bring a 2004 CL55 Kompressor to Perth, will I find it easy to maintain ands most importantly, when I come to sell what percentage of an official import price might I expect to get? I just need a gut feel as to whether I could be stuck with a car no-one will buy? I have looked at carsale.com.au and see they are priced at circa $AUD200K.

The car cost me £34K in the UK and I understand the import costs / taxation issues and so on.

Best regards,

Marcus.

Plenty of Mercedes Dealers in Australia, look up Mercedes Benz Australia and it will give you a list of dealers where you can maintain the vehicle with a dealer.

Redbook.com.au is a good place to look up car prices but I would expect you will return a tidy profit on the car if you do this. I would of said that a personal import will probably reduce the selling price by about $15 - $20K but then thats a wild stab in the dark, in truth, you wont know until you try I dont think.

Remember, the purchaser pays luxury car tax and stamp duty so it might be hard to shift especially as a personal import... in my opinion, its worth doing, but then I would say that as Im about to import my Elise over here.

Personally I wouldnt do it without some serious research..

Firstly what did Mercedes do differently to the cars bought in to Aus? This could include a transmission cooler, oil cooler, bigger radiators, extra fans on the radiator, bigger heat exchanger for the air con...I dont think your car would be unreliable here but its something worth thinking about.

Its all very well looking at the price of cars here compared to the UK price...but you also have to consider if someone has $200,000 to spend on a used car they are going to be looking to buy something with a dealers support and a history in Aus. Would YOU be willing to spend $200,000 in a private sale on a foreign car?

Are you prepared to turn your car in to an aus spec one? I think a prospective buyer would be put off by the MPH speedo and the chance of there being mechanical differences in the car.

You shouldnt have any trouble servicing the car...But I dont know how much support Mercedes Aus will give you though. Even with my MK1 MR2 it can be a pain convincing the Toyota parts counter that the parts for my imported car are the exact same as on an Aus delivered car.
Its worth considering that if you ever have a problem the dealers might be unwilling to help you because the car is an import. I dont know if there are any independants to do the work for you.

I'm not trying to put you off or tell you what to do biggrin It would be a pain to bring something in you cant move on though!

Oh and a reason you SHOULD bring the car in...Cars are bloody expensive and dont depriciate much either. I dont know your job situation when you get here but keeping your car may be the only way you will get to own something like it for some time!!!

I don't think you will have any problem with servicing. There are plenty of non dealer (private) service centres for all the most popular makes, Merc, BMW, Porsche, RR ,Bentley etc. Many are run by migrants who were trained in their countries on the particular makes.
There are also places to buy parts at more competitive prices.
I don't think there will be much difference in the spec in regard to cooling etc. There are plenty of places where it gets hot in summer and it is cheaper to engineer the car so that it can be sold in many markets without fiddling around with it.
Bring it over, I say.
