Nice little car. Interesting how the cylinders come off and the pistons stay put.
Do you intend mending that engine for the sake of originality, or is it scrap? Might as well, now you've got it in bits?
Will probably just stick the spare in, not into originality unless its a financial must, and, lets not get carried away, it isnt worth that much ! the wife loves it so need to get it running so she can use it, we have a deadline of the 10th of July as she was asked to show it at the Wilmslow show, should be able to sort it in a month,Do you intend mending that engine for the sake of originality, or is it scrap? You must be fairly local to me. I didn't know there is a car show in Wilmslow, is it a decent affair and worth visiting?

They're lovely cars and very well known so I think it is worth examining whether the old unit can be salvaged for the sake of originality. Do check it actually is the original engine first though!

Its the Wilmslow show at the High School, been a couple of times, usually a decent turn out of classic and some more exotic stuff as well, worth a visit. You must be fairly local to me. I didn't know there is a car show in Wilmslow, is it a decent affair and worth visiting?
Just want to get it running really, not under any illusions as to its value as it would need significant investment to get it up to scratch, the rear arches are full of filler, few riples on the panels, the paint is rubbish so a full respray would be in order, just after keeping it going as cheaply as possible, reckon its worth between 2 and 3 grand when its running, should have bought one that had been restored properly !
Got the spare engine back and it was full of water ! was tucked up in a dry outbuilding, guess it cant have been that dry, so its not going in as is as was locked solid, good news is that I salvaged the head, a piston and conrod.
The head was wet and a bit crusty but the valves still open and the seats look intact, think the carbon and oil has protected them, the piston was stuck into the bore but came out and it looks ok, a new set of rings and I may be ok.
I got the old motor apart tonight and the broken piston and a very bent conrod attached, am hoping the crank is ok and the conrod and piston took all the damage, the big end bearings still looked new so the previous owner obviously did rebuild it.
So, going to mock it up, get it all inspected and make a list of parts,
New valves
Head Gasket
Exhaust Gasket
Sump Gasket
Oil
Oil Filter
Plugs
Piston Rings
Big End Bearings

Well engine back in, back to its old stinky, noisy self, had a bit of a panic when it was sending oild sideways out of the rocker gaskey, looked bad, was the immaculately painted (by my dad) rocker cover, we used the nicer one of the spare engine, so rather than the terminal back pressure I thought it was, it was a slightly bowed rocker cover, put the old one back on, sorted.
Still a terrible old heap but its running, few jobsto do like, few covers to put back on, needs a tyre for the MOT, clutch cable, Horn isnt working and the brakes are a bit sketchy.

... and I bet you still wrap it up in a blanket before saying goodnight to it!
Lovely. Glad its getting sorted!
I don't, I am a subcontractor, its the wife's car, my involvement is generally only mechanical as it needs as much attention as your average F1 car ! this is all so I can get what I want when I change my car next, my wife last time vetoed a MK2 Golf GTI with a TT engine as it may be unreliable ! I barely use my car so I dont think a lightly used 20VT MK2 will be a problem compared to a sixties Fiat, I have sweated blood on this, next time I change I do what I want !Lovely. Glad its getting sorted!
