Historic/classic road rallying - suggestions
Discussion
Has anyone got any tips for a newcomer to historic road rallies/races?
My Citroen is nearing completion and I am looking at the various events coming up over the next 12 months or so. I'm already entered into a couple (the November Sun Run Alpen Rally and the 2012 Citroen Classic Challenge) which both take place in France/Switzerland/Germany but I have my sights set on something a little, well, bigger...
I am going to enter the Monte Carlo Rallye Historique in Jan/Feb 2013 but it seems a long way off. Can anyone suggest some of the other 'biggies'? I saw that they are running the Monte Carlo Winter Challenge this year in November but i clashes with the Alpen Rally that i've already paid my fees for. Looks great though.
My car isn't eligible for the Mille Miglia as it is a 1973 car fyi.
Cost/entry fees not really an issue and I fancy a competitive one where the cars actually get thrashed rather than a cruise. Advice much appreciated.

Thanks, they look good.
As you say I'm not eligible for the first tour.
Tour Britannia looks good, especially this North Wales / Anglesey one in October - may have a go at that.
Yes the car is being prepped including strengthening (chasis, hydropneumatics, removable cage etc.)
Also had a bit of a breathing on performance wise, but not too much. Fast breathing bespoke exhaust, carb uprated and a few other cheeky bits. Should go well.

If you're going to have a crack at the Monte, you want to have a go at something that'll push you hard day and night. Best UK option has to be LeJog in December this year. It's the only long distance event with true night sections on this year in the UK, the late Warren Chmura campaigned his DS very well on that event over the years and always said it was perfect for the job. I've done it six times and it's bonkers fun!

How strange - I was just reading about Warren and his formidable pink DS when the email came through saying there was a reply to this thread...Yes, I think you're right about Le Jog - I've just been looking at joining HERO to have a crack at this and also one of the Malts.
I've also got the damned London-Lisbon and Rallye de Maroc (Warren's last one I think) stuck in my head.
Spooky! Mind you, Warren competed on almost every event in the calendar it seemed! We started doing HRCR events at the same time.
I've recently sold my Volvo and I'm considering swapping seats with my usual navigator to do Le Jog in his Healey. It gets in the blood I'm afraid that event. It has changed in character a little over the years but it's still a real slog. Wales on the first night is a real test (wrote an Alfa off up there on my first attempt!)and the final 24 hours from the North of England to John O Groats is mindblowing!

I've just read the following about Warren from a aviation rag - sounds like he was quite the fellow.

Right, time to look for a navigator for Le Jog! My wife is due to give birth to our 2nd on New Year's Eve so it could be my last one for a while - may as well make it a big one!

Finding a navigator is one of the hardest tasks there is in Historic rallying, especially when you mention night sections.
I wasn't sure from your first post where you were taking this, but if you are looking at serious events like Le Jog, I'd also consider Rally of the Tests too, though it's not running this year.
Perhaps it would be useful to do some shorter events first though to get a feel for the sport the HRCR rounds are ideal for that.

Ben. Just realised your from Gods own country. Can I suggest a couple of events which would offer brilliant introduction to historic rallying right on your door step.

The Yorkshire revival is one of the few historic events in the country which offer a proper night section, long, hard, fast and at times rough. As a prelude there is half a day of tests to get you in the mood.
Alternatively Kirkby Lonsdale clubs 'Devils Own' rally is running the night section again along with a day and half of tests, that should prove to be a tough event as well.

You'd need a keen navigator for both and a Nat B MSA licence too.
