I may have the opportunity to allow my classic car to be used in a film shoot.Simple question, what`s the going rate if any?How much could I expect out of this? Car transported from Reading to London (by myself)bit of filming with me accompanying the car at all times, and back the same day. That`s all I know about the "film" could be an MGM movie or a stupid little advert.

No idea how much you can charge but you could try ringing these guys up.

Don't know anything about them, they were just on the first page when I googled "hiring cars for a film shoot"

I got £300 for a day when they used mine (and it appeared for a whole 2 seconds, no ides how they fund a street full of classics), but was given the impression that that was on the generous side. No idea if that is true or not.

A few years ago Used Car Roadshow wanted my MG RV8 for a shoot at Beaulieu. All they were offering was all expenses (petrol etc) plus a very nice lunch. I was quite happy with that - I has an interesting day out, an amusing chat with Jason and a very, very nice lunch. Depends I suppose on what value you put on your spare time. My "shoot" was on a Sunday when I had little else on so monetary remuneration was not high on the agenda.

A friend's car was used in an episode of Poirot. Fortunately it was driven sympathetically by the actor whereas another car (both pre-war) was revved mercilessly by the leading actress who couldn't get it out of first gear.

Also, some film companies festoon cars with cameras so make sure there are no marks on the paintwork when your car is handed back.

The Car's the Star, back in the nineties, used m E-type. Arrived midday, left at 5am, no payment, (BBC of course!). I think thecar was on screen for less than 5 minutes! Part of it can still be seen here

I was selling an xr4x4 for a friend and was contacted by a company making a movie wanting it to be used. From memory i think they were going to pay £150 or so for the day. Once you took into account fuel, getting the car there, getting the car dirty and standing around all day, it wasnt really going to be a profit making exercise BUT i guess it would be a nice experience and a talking point if nothing else.

I've had a recent thing through from someone shooting a film in my local town, they're offering £50 for a single day shoot, not a lot but then virtually no travelling.

Thanks for the replies lads. What I was expecting was that they are after an enthusiast who wants a fun day out with his classic, a free lunch and a bit of pocket money. Surprise surprise !! they agreed all the sums I was asking plus a night in a hotel. In the end as the location is just 1.5-2hrs away I`m going to trailer it there, spend the day with it and get £500,didn`t I do well!! I think its that they were stuck for a 60`s LHD French Car in a light colour. When they saw my 64 Peugeot 404 Pininfarina Cabriolet that was it.I just hope the actor can get his head round the collum gear change and not whack it into reverse at speed??

My Mother's husband has a business doing this very thing with his classics ( has over 50 cars and vans, mostly 60's stuff ) and I can assure you he makes almost as much money on repairs after damage as he does with the hire fees itself. They will strap cameras to it, dent it, scratch it, abuse it, it is just a prop to them. I could tell you countless stories of famous people you know (actors )abusing the cars like spoilt brats. My own car ( Scimitar gte ) was used in an episode of Lewis ( an Inspector Morse spin off ) for which it was used as the murderer's car and I got £300, no damage luckily. Trust me, if you cherish you car anything other than a background shot could end in some degree of damage, make sure you are 100% clear on damage bills before you start.
Sayng that it is obviously great to see you car on TV, just go into it eyes wide open.

Good to see someone else is seeing further than how much they can pocket.

Any clue what the project is? An updated Columbo series perhaps? It's the only show comes to mind that requires a Peugot...cool

You have got me worried now, that car never even gets wet!!!! I will be with the car at all times and if they so much as grate reverse gear I`ll jump in it and go home. The info I have sounds to me it will not get out of first gear and not leave the location .The car will appear to be driving in France in the 60`s and pull up at a cafe, that's it? It will be done in front of a "green screen"?? and France will be added later. You classic experts can imagine what may happen,it spends all day starting, stopping and idling so with a dynamo the battery may go flat just at the last full take.(I`m taking a charger and jump leads)
