I'll be taking my car over to Europe again shortly and was looking into the best breakdown cover available.

I'm in the RAC and last year I used added their cover for a single trip, cost was in excess of £100 for just over a week as I recall.

Most sites I've tried recently don't offer cover for cars over 15 years old and my cars definately fall into that category.

Anyone able to offer some alternatives and any good/bad experiences ?

Won't help this time but when the insurance renewal comes around check what different companies include in their cover. I'm with Footman James (via the TSSC) and get Euro breakdown cover free as part of my insurance.

My TVR is 16 years old. Just taken an AA breakdown for it at a cost of £95 for a week. Told them I was going to Germany, and they immedietely said that the 'Ring was excluded.

Wonder how they guessed that was where I was going.

You need ADAC PartnerPlus membership:

Age of car is immaterial, and they cover to AA Relay standard. Easily the best deal, and will replace your UK breakdown cover too. smile

Previously I've paid the same amount for the RAC cover on my 911 for Le Mans trips (and used them once!)

However now I'm insured with Hagerty and full Euro cover is included. Just bite the bullet this time and sort it out on insurance renewal as has already been suggested.

Got to agree with the advice on finding an insurance co. that offers U.K. and euro' breakdown cover. I have had a weeks cover priced at over three hundred pound before now on one of my old cars. My most recent insurance quote (with R.H.) for my 4.2 Jaguar powered '36 Austin is one hundred and forty pound fully comp' inc' euro' breakdown cover. If you go this route just make sure that the euro' cover provided is for long enough as quite often it will be for ten days or fourteen days max.

I had similar problems with going to France in my 1991 Defender, although I'd been a customer of the RAC for 27 years, they wanted to fleece me for an extra £80'ish just for the 1 week cover.
I checked all over, I just couldn't get a decent price, also most wouldn't cover it as it was over 15 years old. In desperation I called my insurance company (Roadsure - ie Premium Choice) as the insurance was similar to classic car insurance. The nice lady said, "No problem, it'll be £49" I thought, that's better, a saving of £30 or so. Then she said "Unfortunately you'll need to renew when your insurance is due again in 9 months time"
So to cut a long story short, after confirming with her 3 times just what cover I was getting for £49 / year, I snatched her hand off!
Cover is; Personal cover, ie anything that I'm driving or passenger in, full European cover, hotels, etc etc if broken down etc etc. I have a number of other vehicles (toys!) so personal cover is what I wanted.
Now I've sold the Defender and bought an old Disco 1, I phoned them up and changed the insurance over, also checked that the breakdown cover would continue and be renewable when the insurance is due, - no problems!
I checked other specialist insurance brokers, and although I could get the insurance part some £20 cheaper, I just can't get the same breakdown cover anywhere.

To those who have recovery with the AA or Greenflag CHECK YOUR POLICY as they have restrictions on how old the vehicle is ( The salesman might sell it to you, but when you come to need it, Oh dear!)

From the AA terms & conditions;..................
5. Additional restrictions for Vehicle Membership

n Where only Roadside Assistance is held, the vehicle must be no more than 10 years old at the date
of registration with the AA.

n No recovery (including a local tow) is available following an accident.

From Greenflag terms & conditions;...............
Section E – EuroPlus

of this booklet, those detailed in the separate Green Flag Breakdown
Cover in Europe section will apply.
Please remember

is less than 16 years of age.

Personal Cover
What is covered:
If shown on your Breakdown Schedule, the highest level of cover
purchased will be extended to apply when you and/or your spouse or
partner is/are driving with the owner’s permission or travelling in any
private eligible vehicle which is less than 16 years of age and which
does not exceed the weight and size limitations as set out under the
meaning of ‘Vehicle’ in the ‘Definitions’ section. We reserve the right
to request proof of identification before providing service under this
cover. This cover is only available for incidents that occur in the UK.

My 47 year old classic is with Towergate Cherished car insurance (Aviva) and European b/down cover is part of the policy (£205).I`ve never used the cover in Europe but got RAC relay from Manchester to Reading FOC after one phone call. Most classic policies would not pay for relay back to the UK but would cover the cost of road side assistance or repair at the nearest garage.Other policies will pay for more.AA & RAC European cover on late cars will pay for everything, repatriation, hotels, hire car etc etc.
