Hi all,

Please sign this ePetition to restore the £0 Road Tax that was frozen at 1972.

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/183

You never know, it may just happen...or not. Still, it is worth a shout.

Cheers,

C. smile

How about a petition to scrap vehicle tax all together? 5p on fuel would be much fairer and simpler.

Yea, start a petittion to reduce the governments tax income during a global recession when the nation is hocked up to it's eyeballs and needs to reduce national borrowing.

Good luck with that.

I would rather pay, I don't trust them when they want to give me stuff.

I didn't start it, fwiw. I just posted it, oh what a crime!

If the Gov didn't waste so much of the taxpayers hardearned dosh, there would not be as much of an issue (wrt the post and subject).

But hey, I hope you smoke like a train, drink like a fish, earn a seven figure sum each year and have a massive fleet of vehicles that all attract the highest road tax. Keep paying all them taxes, just to help out, and all...

We had a thread about this very topic just a short while ago.
I seem to remember it got quite heated.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

What many here fear is that stirring up the topic with the powers that be could result in all sorts of limitation on use being imposed. I know from discussions with the Ministry officials a few years ago we were lucky the escape an EU wide ban which would have made it impossible to carry children in many classic cars. What we got was bad enough, but it could have been a whole lot worse. How about a law that everything had to be type approved including older vehicles? fancy paying for a fully audited crash test on your classic?

not really relevent but,the eurocrats are already thinking about severe restrictions on the motorcycle world.
my local news had a piece about mass protest rolling blockades by bikers and bike clubs/organisations yesterday.
they are proposing that any modifications or parts replacement can only be carried out by registered dealers and bike garages.

it's the thin end of the wedge i tell you.

Doesn't matter what petition gets signed or by how many, it's not going to happen!. (See the other thread for the reasons why).

HERE WE GO AGAIN . . . .

How can people be so dumb to think that any concession in 'road tax' will not come with conditions restricting the use of your classic??? Believe me, it will happen if concessions are given. So, don't be a tight arse, stump up a few hundred quid for your 'road tax' and be thankful, for the moment at least, that you are still allowed to use your old motor on the road whenever you want and for whatever purpose you want.

(WALKS OFF IN TOTAL DESPAIR . . .)

Resto, Varsas, etc, you are all making one large assumption.

Why live life being such utter pessimists? You'll find life far more enjoyable if you come away from the dark side and learn how optimism works. smile

If you don't like life in the UK/EU you have a choice, you know?

I'm not a pessimist, otherwise I wouldn't have a Stag!

I like life in the UK fine thanks, one of the things I enjoy is the freedom to enjoy my classics as I want to. I want to defend that freedom, petitions like these are a threat to that. I'm not the one trying to change things!

OK, how about this. Why should old cars be exempt from tax? Through all of these threads I've never heard a good argument for bringing it back. If you want me to support you, you need to put forward an argument. Us 'pessimists' have put quite persuasive arguments against (in the other thread, anyway) but I've never even seen a 'pro' petition argument, let alone a good one. I think we are lucky to have pre '73 cars exempt (actually, with regard to classics in particular and cars in general we are very lucky in this country), wouldn't it actually be fairer if that exemption was lifted, and pre '73 cars where charged as usual? Old houses still pay council tax.

Personally I would support putting road tax on fuel, or paying per person rather then per car but that's not what you are asking for.

Well said Varsus.

Neither am I a pessimist - just a realist.

The Governments of this world use the Environment as an excuse to levy as many taxes upon us as they can get away with. Do you really think that those same Governments are going to give any further tax concessions than that already available to drive around in your 'old, dirty, polluting classic'? Of course not. Be thankful for the freedom you have to use your classic whenever you want to.
