Investing in Pensions is a mugs game at the moment.

Any suggestions on buying a Classic Car that you can enjoy and in 5 years time it won't have dropped in value. Budget is £25k

I would say to pick a model and only buy the best. Purchasing a cheap car with the idea of restoration (unless you are really mechanically minded) is a futile exercise.

Find something that has a strong enthusiast following...

Some Classics seem very overvalued at the moment and I see one problem as recognising which ones they are?

I'd buy fifty Series II Land Rovers.

Will this help?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Better-Than-Gold-Investing...

Recently it's been the most desirable vehicles in a range that have gone up most; so split screen campers not bay windows, S1 E-types not the 2+2, the P5B not the P6 etc etc. For £25k? I'd buy a TR5. Good fun, strong, won't cost a lot if it does break and I reckon they are good value. Compare them to Austin-Healeys for example and they look very cheap. I also believe pretty much all saloon cars are very undervalued (that doesn't actually mean they will go up...), and Stag's seem to be going through a bit of a dip at the moment (but I doubt you'll ever make that much on a Stag).

Whatever you get make sure it's a good example of a desirable version. Everyone has been saying 80's stuff will surely go up soon. James Bond style Esprit turbo? Lancia Integrale?

ETA: Over 5 years I'd rather lose £5k on something I liked then make £5k on something I didn't...

2 x S1 elises and 1 x vx220.

In all seriousness, finding a car that wont loose money is as much risk as any other 'investments'. Who knows what will happen to the price of classics in the future. Personally i think most £25k classics are over-priced and would be a risky investment.

Spreading the risk over a couple (or 50) cars would be my bet if this is truly a money making scam, rather than getting a car to enjoy. 993s do seem to be holding value though......

This was mentioned on the 'So what car have you been obsessing about today??' thread. With weekend use, and if you are prepared to make it a long term resto project, I can only see it making money.

You can't buy style like that. Well, you can, and it's £15k. (And then probably the same again every five minutes).
Another one I can't see losing money is this.

I'm not sure how much the RZ goes for, but all of them are underestimated classics in my opinion.

Split screen camper or a samba all day, there is one in classic ,mart for £50,000 this week! Wtf is that about? I sold mine for peanuts in 2000 and bought a bay because I didn't think the resto on the splitty was economically viable - shows you what i know.

Any car with a popular scene, i.e vw, fast ford, mini.

I sold a mini 1275 gt for peanuts as well after college to go on a lads holiday in shagaloof..... God damn it!

15k should see a decent one of these.

Cant see them dropping any value, as they become older and rarer should only increase in value.
(value of motors can go down as well as up!)

Fairly easy to insure/service and fuel if you want to use it at weekends.

Or as mint an Integrale/early Escort Cosworth you can find. Must be completely standard in a sensible colour with history.
Cant see them going up much but should retain value.

I don't understand the point of this thread then. I thought the idea was to find something that might rise by £5k over 5 years that is enjoyable?

I'd add a BMW Z1 to my suggestions.

Wheeler era TVR's, specifically:
SEAC
Griff 500
4.5 Cerbs
Mk1 Tuscan S (real ones)
Tuscan Convertible
T350
Sagaris

Goes without saying that they must all be in good nick with proper and reputable maintenance/rebuild history. As always, non standard cars will be worth less.

Avoid anything that's even remotely described as a project!

Almost any manufacturer will have something in their line up that can be a candidate but if I were you I'd look at anything with a horse on the front. These are the cars that most people grew up wanting to own so it stands to reason the safest bet is in Modena or Stuttgart's finest.

As stated (somewhat biased though eh mark?!) a 993 is a good shout, though personally in 5 years I'd say almost any air cooled 911 is a good bet though 993's are getting to the age where they can start costing you big bills. A fully restored late model 3.2 carrera (that's the one with the concertina type bumpers) just sold in little over a week in the ph classifieds for under 17 grand. With someone else footing all the bills that could well be better than money in the bank for the new owner.

Ferrari 348's are within budget & although currently the unloved v8 this months evo review might be the start of a turning tide.

Just remember no depreciation doesn't mean no spending!

As said though almost any manufacturer will have a candidate, my advice would be pick a marque that suits you, with a local club meet or an active social side, that way you get the satisfaction of 0% depreciation & the benefits of meeting some like minded petrol heads to do the inevitable le mans trips & alpine hoons every summer smile

E30 M3, Lancia Delta Integrale or/and Escort Cossie.

If your spending 25k you may as well go for the fleet option.

Old Land Rovers. Don't believe me? Compare the prices over the last few years.
