Panther Solo

I have a real passion for trawling ebay's classic car section and i am sure i am not alone....

Today, finally, I found it...possible one of the greatest sports cars never to have happened. Car magazine even said that it was the most significant car since the E-type.....whoops!

Anyway..

here it is, thoughts anyone??

I'd love that car. One of those cars from the 80s/90s which I remember pouring over magazine articles about. Fascianting car, great story, great looking in my opinion, and you can have a Sierra Cosworth engine fitted.

1990 KJ220 'XP0102' - states somewhere it is smaller than the production car (sale by tender closing date 08/12/2011).

Yes, I think the seller has googled for details and got it wrong.

The car we know as the Solo is actually Solo 2 - the Solo 1 prototypes looked very different and were mid-engined, 2wd with CVH power.

That's what we were getting at!

Solo 2 were 2lt Cosworth power with 4wd.

Solo 1 were RWD 1.6 CVH power.

There was an article about this XJ220 protype in one of the rags recently.
I guess that was in preparation for this sale :-)

I built most of the buck that the body moulds were taken from . I was not to keen on the backend then but it seems to have aged quite well .

I remember the CAR artical, there may have even been a photo of it on the front cover. Didn't do much for me then and sadly the Solo does even less for me now. There's far better ways imo of spending 14.5k on a classic.

Yep, you are right some manufacturers would disagree judging by their offerings.

Personally, 4x4 on a proper sports car seems to defeat what sports cars are all about imo, with the exception of living in the Alpine conditions, as per Ferrari's latest GT machine. If Merc fit it to the SLS, Honda to the next NSX and Ferrari to the 458 as standard, I'll then accept 4x4 is the only way to go. Until then I'll pass.

Yes - I cannot remember which magazine.

Don Law Racing in Stoke has two for sale:
1993 green (which I think is £185,000).
1993 yellow one

Both are left hand drive.

Cavello in California had a XJ220S for sale a few months back (painted - the current 'flavour of the month' - Orange).

Couple more for £249,950 and £POA

Always reassuring to buy such a rare car from a seller who hasn't got a clue what engine it has. A turbocharged and supercharged CVH?? Wonder how often it was maintaned?

Weren't those XJ220S versions just the run-out vehicles that Jag couldn't shift? From memory, TWR jazzed them up in funny colours and supplied them to one particular dealer (presumably at a very low price) just to clear the stock. Still took them ages to sell them though!

I think you are right.

281 road cars.
TWR developed 6 further cars to become "S" versions (road going versions of the racing 220C).
