Good morning all.

Lordy knows how long I've lurked around PH, it must have been a good few years now. Anyway, I'm getting the itch, having worked on cars for years, I want to finally get round to restoring one. I'm happy on the tools, fine with welding & even happy (ish) spending hours rubbing down body work. Ok, rubbing down body work is enormously tedious, but you know what I mean.

Specifically, I have always hankered after a 70's 911, either a Targa S or a 911sc. I appreciate these are expensive cars at the best of times & thin on the ground to say the least, but I much prefer the slimmer lines compared to today's chunky Porkers.

I'm on the lookout for a suitably down on it's luck 911, but I wanted to ask the panel if they have any specific pitfalls to watch out for. I understand that there will be corrosion, mid 70's engines can be short lived & that in particular gearboxes are very expensive to repair, but I'm prepared & budgeted for those eventualities. What I'm looking for is any specific fatal flaws in a project motor that one should avoid like the proverbial.

If you have an interest in 70's 911's then you need to get yourself logged onto Impactbumpers.

The 915 'box is less expensive to rebuild than a 911 motor.

Plenty of rough 911's out there.

OP, you could also try talking with the guys on DDK. There are many members who've done just what you'd like to do; I'm sure they can help www.ddk-online.com/
