Worth watching, just to appreciate how much safety (a good thing!) we have today....

I opened that YT link to the German 1970s crashes , but scroll down and their is up to date crash footage . I can't remember it's title but there is an absolutely Horific film of a white Porshe 996 or 997 Race car sliding into the crash barriers head / three quarters on ....
It Instantly bursts into a massive fireball and bounces back off of the barrier. I just can't beleive how quickly and how severe the fire is . Ime assuming that the tank has gone up , it doesn't look like the poor devil gets out of it either .
A 996 is one car that I had hoped to own one day , but I don't think so now .

I think this may be the video you are refering to. The Porsche was initially OK, the 355 did the damage.
Thats a well known clip... and horrific. It happened in Japan and the driver of the 355 was Tetsuya Ota, he was badly burned. He was in the burning car for over a minute from memory as the marshalls pratted around, it was a shocking display of incompetence from the race track. No fatalities, thank goodness and a clear validation for wearing fire retarding race suits as he wasn't badly burned on the body. It ended his career and made a mess of his face but he was lucky to survive.

Amazing how much crap disintegrates off the ones that turn over. Including people popping out of open doors.And just how many of those cars are rear engined? Apart from the 02 BMWs and the Capri most seem to be. Coincidence???

IIRC the marshalls were just grabbed from anywhere with only basic flag training. Some changes were made after that. OllieC said:

Which is just like the Le Mans Classic. Now figure this; it takes 1,600 marshals to run the June 24 hours race, and less than 500 for the Classic three weeks later. If it hadn't been for Guy Broad stopping and getting his extinguisher out in 2004 when the driver of this C-type swerved to avoid a flying bonnet from an Allard, hit both armco's, rolled it and then caught fire, he'd be a dead man. The impact was so severe that the exhaust manifold was completely ripped off the block and they never did find one torsion bar.
One day, but God forbid, I forsee a really serious accident at the Classic. On post at the scene of this accident were two men not in their prime of youth and one woman.
Edit: forgot to add that the driver escaped with two broken collar bones.
