As the title says really, before I start phoning every company under the sun, are there any classic car insurers I should head too first?

Im sure there are plenty of people on here with plenty of experience on the matter!

Im 22, 3 years no claims and the car is a '84 Datsun 280zx if that makes a difference...

Lots to choose from mate, but your age will be against you.
Have a look on the classic car area on here, you might find more help there.

you will need to ring and talk to them not text or just accept the restrictions on their web page

you could try the co-Op

Peter James - http://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/

and loads of others

it'll be a day's work to ring around them all but unless you're paid a lot per day it'll save you money

don't just go for the cheapest check that it fully covers your requirements

with classic insurance you can get a lot of things as standard that are normally charged extra for on other policies, like possibly, UK/European breakdown cover, legal cover (always get legal cover even if you have to pay for it), agreed valuation, mods, no garage, third party cover for other people's car, other named driver, low excess

I get all of the above as standard in my Peter James policy but I'm a bit older so some may not be available to a 22 year old but you wont know for sure unless you ask

my policy has a Young Drivers Excesses against me of:
under 21 - £250
21 to 24 - £150

excess is important to the policy premium you pay, note there are two excesses you pay one fixed and the second voluntry, the higher both are the lower the premium you pay but bear in mind if you have an accident that's taken as your fault you have to pay the excess towards the repair and all of a sudden a high excess may not seem such a good idea

Another vote for Footman James, insured me from 19-24 on classics and considerably cheaper than others.

it may be that the policy was, er, 'oversold' as regards the vehicle and pehaps person so now they may not be selling all classic policies to every under 25 - but still worth asking as they are selling to some

I have the Jensen insured with Classicline, being just 27 at the time, they were able to halve premiums offered by Footmans and others.

yes I used to be with Peter Best but then I swap to Peter James - and wish I'd gone to Peter James from the start as their policy was better but at a good percentage less money smile

I've been with PBIS for years and yes their quote last year was quite a bit more than previous years. However I "Go Compared" and "Confused" for other quotes then went back to PBIS with a much lower renewal quote and they agreed to match it. I think it depends on how much they want your business smile

Are you going to use the Datsun as a daily driver? As said your age and the car will cost you but if your only going to use it part time for shows etc you will get a good deal (I think).I`m with Towergate Cherished car Underwriting agency.Agreed MY valuation of £17K,1500 miles a year, must be garaged, fully insured during winter storage, includes RAC recovery,Etc Etc for £210.Mind you an old fart`s summer hobby policy is no comparison to a young bloke who wants to use an old sports car as a daily driver ??
