Not so much for me but for my FiL.

Being retired and having a shrinking income he is having to give up his taste for big German motors and downsize to something more modest. I'm pretty sure however he will soon have an itchy wallet when in comes to splashing out on a new car again!

Whilst he isn't looking for a ground up restore project a good, solid classic car would keep him occupied and entertained on a Sunday drive, I've no real idea what can be had in decent condition for that price range.

I don't think an open top British sports car is his thing, he would however I'm sure love a Mk2 Jag, unfortunately is out of the budget frown

Any suggestions for something up to late 80's vintage welcome smile

Lots of choice for this money. You could get a lovely Triumph 2000, maybe even a 2.5Pi or a Rover P6. Dolly Sprints are heading upwards, but might be a contender too and I do have a soft spot for Hillman Imps and Morris Minors.

Younger than requested, but always loved these, a rare RHD too.

A future classic imo, and won't lose its value if looked after.

How about:

A classic Saab 900 convertible (solid, reliable and a bit different, but also usable every day). Can also be quite swift...

Spitfire - plenty around at sub 5k

BMW - E30 series - e.g. http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3602078.htm

Funny you mention the 900, I believe he used to have one and a non-cabrio Turbo would no doubt go down very well.

I'm not sure an 80's BMW would cut it whereas perhaps a Mercedes CL would.

Would not have to be a convertible. Although they are more fun.

Now that I like smile

I shall e-mail him that and see if it catches his eye smile

As for the VR6 suggestion, a lovely car but not what he is looking for.

huge choice- plenty at that price to suit all tastes. get him to think about what he wnats the car for- polishing, driving, high days, long drives, visiting the golf course etc etc

Another thoughts: How about the last of the line jaguar XJ12 from 1990-ish? Or a latter XJR
The XK8 or XKR
German metal as already listed
Rover P6 with the V8 engine

Following a recent shed article. I am feeling big love for these beauties at the moment, you can still work on them and this one looks in mint condition. I think they are about to come of age value wise in this condition http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C259368

Alternatively you will get a mint Saab 900 T16s for 5k, or a half decent late eighties BMW 635CSI

All of the above have style panache and go like bds!!

You could get a very nice Porsche 944 coupe for £5k, nice 80's car and solidly built too.

Bit over budget but this looks great for the price and you could barter them down a bit. smile

I'd love it myself to be honest

If he likes German metal, and is looking at something from the '80s what about these?

Audi quattro turbo

BMW E28 M535i
BMW E30 325 sport

He could also still get a tidy E34 M5 for £5k

Merc 190 2.3 or 2.5 16v
Merc CE Coupe- many engine options
Merc SEC Coupe

You'd get a good 80's Opel Manta or Monza for that money. Nice cars, and getting rare now too. A nice straight six Monza would be very comfortable. (German ish!)
