"The engines that never made it"

Such as, Rovers diesel conversion of the Buick V8 and the straight 6 version of the Rover 2000 4 pot?

Jaguar "SV6", small capacity V6, sizes ranging from 2 to 2.4 litres.
Compact capacity, all alloy, small external dimensions, using some common parts such as tappets and bearing sizes with the Ford Zetec-SE (Sigma) 4 cylinder of the time.
To go into the smaller X types , X600 roadster (also still born)and perhaps the X202 S type. Was killed due to pressure from Ford who pushed using the larger Jaguar 3 litre Duratec based engine and scaling it down to near 2 litres instead.
Using a big engine and de-stroking and de-boring somewhat with the same bearing sizes is technically the worst thing to do. Did Fords technical guys know that? Probably. Did Fords cycle plan process guys and policians care? No, they had their own agendas...

I've always said this and the Japanese and German understand this: You won't have commercial success if you don't have technical success...

The 70s Jaguar V8 that never really worked (it was a Jaguar V12 with four pistons sliced off).

Stag V8 with Dolly Sprint heads was running on the test bench at BL, rumour has it was up to 400hp when it blew up.

Citroen's air cooled Flat-6 which was originally designed for the DS. Would have been tremendous.

The diesel and V8 versions of the Vauxhall "Slant 4", both talked about though I'm not sure how far either of them got.

Subaru's 1990 F1 3.5 litre flat 12.

There's been a few gas turbine dead-ends as well.

nearly ALL stag engines blew up, thats why so many ended up with Fod V6 or Rover V8 engines retro-fitted (the V8 was the engine it should always have had but couldnt due to licensing problems)

And by "so many" you mean "very few". Try finding a Stag these days that DOESN'T have a Triumph v8 in it!

13 Stags on eBay right now - 11 with 3l engines and 2 with Triumph 2.5l straight 6s in them. None with either Ford v6s or Buick v8s in them.

an original stag with original V8 (2xdollysprint 4 pot?) must be a rare thing now

that was a LONG timing chain

It's not... the majority of Stags out there have the original engine fitted. Many have been modified however to allow for better cooling.

The original Ford Ka was going to have a 2 Stroke engine, but this got canned due to emissions regulations.

There was a lot of talk of turbo injected two strokes giving huge power gains at the time. They would firing twice as often. Simple fact of physics.

I thought then the emissions would be the problem.

It was and has never been solved.

Two strokes are great unless you need clean emissions.

No hope.

Never heard of a Buick V8 diesel before. Did BL produce one?

I would have thought the castings on the alloy V8 not up to that kind of use.

What killed the project?

I thought Orbital's technology solved that.

The claims were 50% lighter, 30% more fuel efficient, 20% cheaper to make, 70% smaller, and produces 30% less pollution than traditional engines (ie 4-strokes).

That was back in 1995 though, although this article suggests that modern 2-strokes can meet emissions standards (for snowmobiles anyway wink )

I think reality has voted with its feet on two stroke car engines.

So far as I know there are none. Says it all.
