Modern Classic up to 10k?

I want to buy a modern classic in the BMW 635CSI or four seater soft top Mercedes vain. The idea is to get one in very good clean condition and with a nice service history. I want to enjoy it for a few months whilst going through the mechanics with a fine tooth comb, and then giving it a very very deep clean ( the cleaning the sump bolts with a toothbrush kind of deep clean). I would like to then resell for a little bit of profit.
Can anyone put forward suggestions for alternative cars that I could look into buying other than the two I have suggested. They need to have a bit of style and panache, without being fragile mechanical time bombs??

From a purely personal point of view I think you are approaching this from the wrong angle. You used the fatal word profit and in order to buy and sell on at a profit the purchase price needs to be right. So if a profit is your intention you should be looking more at price,then and only then if the price is right cionsider does the car appeal.
The market you are after is the same one as thousands of other enthusiasts, hence the general success of ebay and the often inflated prices seen in that theatre.

OP, buy a £10k 911 and you'll end up spending another £5k getting it right. i'm with benjj here and your original ideas of a bmw or mercedes. an xjs is a nice idea but there are some very good ones around for £6-£8K that may be hard to turn a sensible profit as they're still only worth £6-£8K. you my well like to buy the car that gets you 'going', drive for the pleasure, and then sell when ready to sell.
really, just buy what you like to enjoy...try not to buy for pure profit; you'll end up being disappointed within this price sector.

Yes, I have also been watching this car. Looks very good and seller seems to own a bodyshop. Would if could, but can't so wont. 
Good suggestions guys keep it up...The market seems to be mad for German stuff at the minute, so I'm probably going to go that route. I've seen a nice Mercedes SL with the three point five lump for not much money and it has a good bulkhead and floor. They seem to be a good example of what got me curious in the first place i.e you can have two cars that appear to be in broadly the same condition yet ones ten grand and the other is six or seven grand....and they are both selling?!?
The 350 sl is a very good reliable car, but like a lot of the above cars they do like a drink. Your likely looking at 15mpg at best nowadays that's a big expense just on its

Best shout so far.Based on the recent "look at the price of clasic Fords FFS threads" - what about an FRP. You'll get the best car in the country for 10K.
A 911 at that money? - when it goes wrong you'll want to take your own life when the bills start rolling in.
