What did I see in London?

Quite hard to describe this... Looked of the vintage of a Ford Business Coupe, almost certainly American.

The bonnet (hood?) was open on both sides, exposing the engine.

The car had a beautiful orange/blue paint scheme, well polished, the engine and exposed rear diff were beautifully chromed.

The numberplate was 247 UHX and the plate holder had a "Tangerine Dream" sticker on it.

I was hoping the driver would stop at an amber light so I could ask him what he was in, but unfortunately he decided to go for it

Any ideas?

The insurance database just lists it as a "Ford Coupe"

'32 3 window Ford Coupe, AKA Li'l Deuce Coupe. (deuce being yank for two, generally in cards, but stolen for other stuff too)

The reg search would suggest it's real, or at least on a Ford chassis.

Lots of kits available as it's the Hot Rod scene's Cobra in many ways. Sounds from your description as if the bonnet side panels are removable or was it completely open like this?

It's nice, I prefer 50's and 60's style hot rods though. '32 (deuce or model b as they're also called) roadster in black with red solid steel wheels would look great in the garage next to my Cal Look Beetle

the orange/grey one is a '34, the black flames is a model A (so up to '31) with a model B '32 grill

The fenders (wings) are more curved as well, and the windscreen is more upright on model A's and B's. I'm sure there are heaps of differences, I'm not an expert I just want a rod one day!

The top one with the running gear from the bottom one, that would surprise a few people.. I love 50s American pick ups, absolute classics.

Not quite right Hugo.

American '32s are Model Bs; '33s & '34s are Model 40s.

English built Model Bs (which have a slightly different body) were built from '32 to '34 ('33s & '34s had side skirts to the fenders as per American Model 40s).

A bright chrome yellow '32 Coupe is right up near the top of my lottery list. Love 'em. I have a great "coffee table" book by Tony Thacker (?) all about them - hot rod p0rn! (ooerr)

That's the one! Absolutely gorgeous. I slowed down to 30 on a NSL dual carriageway just to sit behind it and ogle for a couple of miles.

I only saw the offside hood panel, which is open in that Flickr set. Quite a sunny day, that grey looked almost blue. Stunning!
