Fast modern car which will become an appreciating classic?
Discussion
Bit of a selection all of which is love to own but think there should always be sinsible investment thoughts behind it.
RS2
RS4 2.7v6 bi turbo
RS6 C5 4.2 v8 bi turbo
Cerbera v8 AJP not sure 4.2 or 4.5
996 TT
Ferrari 456
Lotus Carlton
S2000
Bently Turbo R
Clearly this is somewhat of a fast car list but they are all very much desirable to any petrol head

RS2 and Lotus Carlton yes, the rest I think would be a gamble...
The RS4 only had 400 examples 380bhp and a usable family wagon too ( mrs is interested in that with our little princess)
S2000 lots of examples so guessing its going to be just a nice car with great engine.
996 TT cannot see any money being lost and you can always say I dive a Porche a proper Porche.
Cerbera speed machine v8 looks oh my god fast was another poster car of mine
RS2 Porche built Audi RS while the RS4 has a cosworth built engine.
I'd like to say any properly fast Ford, as the Escort Cosworth is still commanding prices of 15-20k for a good example. However to my mind that was the last 'proper' RS they built, as amazing as the current focus RS is I'm not sure if it's going to have quite the same collectability in 15 years time?
They're still never going to be cheap that's for sure!

996 TT is a devastatingly quick car but on here PHers often or nearly always mistake ability with collctors appeal- in the same way the GT3 was vaunted by the track pundits as a future classic and it was totally wrong as was the 996 GT2. It won't happen- they probably won't go down much now anymore but it's a mass produced car that's in the shadow of the 993.

The RS2 is getting old, number are dwindling, poor examples are dying. This is why I think it is a certain future or present classic. Porsches Rossle-Bau plant built the car, also responsible for the Mercedes 500E and the Porsche 959. The specifications and speeds were second to none for a car of that era.Cerbera speed machine v8 looks oh my god fast was another poster car of mine

I feel the RS4, as much as I like it, is a range topper though not incredibly special. I'm surprised the RS2's are not more expensive now.
There's an argument for saying that in 20 years time petrol will be so expensive that the market for sub 40mpg cars will be tiny.
Certainly if you look at the way fuel has risen in cost over the last 10 years and look at the continued instability in parts of the world that are important to the oil trade, I'd say all bets were off.
A Tesla might be a good place to start looking for a future proof classic.
Then again buy quick cars now whilst they are affordable and hang the cost.

I've thought about this, they'll be even more special. I don't think it will change the classic market. Truly special cars will always be worth a premium to collectors and enthusiasts. Regardless of fuel costs.
It's only a matter of time before the government back off from the fuel duty and switch to alternate ways of poking out our eyeballs and pissing on our brains. Mainly due to the change in new cars engines and drivetrains making mega MPG.

The reality is they suffer from the modern classic problems of having that extra digit on the odometer. This means the 100k plus uses shows. Classic Classics don't have that problem so people can believe/kid themselves that it's genuine miles, when often these clocks have been around more than once.
More important is that they are of an age when many need light touch restoration, & expensive component repair/replacements. All this can double the cost of the actual purchase price.
Which brings them to cost to pocket level of more modern metal that is ready to drive away with confidence.
In saying that surely the RS2 must be the bargain collectors car to be had?
There are plenty of cars I would personally choose before the RS2, but, if I was in the game for an appreciating classic I would ignore the mega miles and go for one. e28 M5's too.... and 500e. There are a few of these special cars kicking around for not too much money.
It won't stay that way forever. As they get older they start to become cool again.

Yes, but with only iirc 315 RHD produced, I'm keeping mum about it.There are plenty of cars I would personally choose before the RS2, but, if I was in the game for an appreciating classic I would ignore the mega miles and go for one. e28 M5's too.... and 500e. Three litre V6 Alfa GTV - prices are already rising.
Already had the Fiat coupe which is essentially the exact same car and really it's not fast enough given I always want to have a step increase in pace to keep things interesting. Also, do not confuse the two litre GTV with the V6 versions. The V6s are plenty quick enough, unless, again, you are looking for a Saturn V .

Fiat Coupe not fast enough???!!!!! Did you have the 20V turbo? If not, I might understand your comment, but if you did, and you think the 20v turbo not fast enough, you must live in a very fast world indeed! The Fiat and the GTV share the same platform, but are very different in many respects, and are not the same car.

Yep 20v turbo for 6-7 years so very used to the power. Also, do not confuse the two litre GTV with the V6 versions. The V6s are plenty quick enough, unless, again, you are looking for a Saturn V .
See original list of cars they are upwards of 380bhp well some are.
Many in the big 'N' bling sections of PH confuse horsepower with speed, but it surprises me to see that view expressed here in ye olde banger room.
My Europa has 111 BHP. My MV Agusta has only 36 BHP. Neither could be accused of being slow. My Murena has 142 BHP and is nutter fast. There's more to life than horseys.
