Browsing Verdi's sales and saw they have a Lotus Cortina for sale. £50k.

I thought Verdi had been shut down for stealing their customers' money.

Has it opened up again under a relative's name or something?

No. I'd rather it looked like the first pic, and not thrashed to extremes.

But, like you, although I'd love one, I can't afford it.

No, it's not the cost, but the driving experience, for £50k I could do better, but then it is a good looking car. A mates dad had one and I remember getting a lift in it when we were kids, great experience. Then I had a GT 35 years ago, great fun, but I don't care to drive one now

As a driving experience a worn-out one is so disappointing They don't drive like modern cars, they're 50 years old. A mate, aged 18, bought a very solid useable Mk2 Twin-Cam (a genuine Lotus) for £500 around 1986. His 2nd car. It was a bit of an expensive disaster at the time.

I would like to try a good one though.

Errm, FIFTY THOUSAND POUNDS.

For a restored ermine-white Mk1 Cortina with some green paint and some badges and a 105bhp (as standard) 8-valve twin-cam.

Nice car, like it a lot, am sure it has interesting history, but £50K ???????

I had the chance to buy one back in the 70's for £190 with a rotten floor....... and I walked away.

IMO these things are on a bit of a bubble atm, when it bursts something like this should be worth around £35k, considering that other than the condition it's nothing special (no ally panels, special equipment spec etc)

They have been on a bubble for some time, they have been steadily rising since mid 80's. Can't see them crashing too far!

Other than a Lamborghini Miura, there's no other classic car I'd rather own than a Mk1 LC. Absolutely fabulous, imho.

Anyone know whereabouts of BPH 54H, a white 1970 Cortina Twin-Cam?

A friend had it from 1986 to around 1991. Was in north east of Scotland for many years but mate moved to Birmingham area around 1989 and sold it soon after. DVLA records show not been taxed for over 20 years.

Had solid body with original panels, had been stored for much of its life, Webasto sunroof, Dunlop 6" alloys. Was gen Lotus and registered as such in DVLA records and had all the Lotus details, but was quoted as having 1599cc rather than 1558cc. Was definitely not scrap-car condition but did need some work as had been well used and was mechanically very tired.

In May 1982 I had an " Aquaintance " with too much money and who changed cars like socks. He turned up one day in an Original white MK 2 Lotus Cortina .

One sunny sunday, myself in my yellow MK1 3000 GT Capri ( EVC 289L ) another blue K reg MK1 3000E and the guy in the Lotus Cortina set off for Cambridge .
The L Cortina had had "some body work " in the past which had included the fitment of a pair of Fiberglass front wings, which were held on by self tappers .....

We were somewhere on the M11 , with the Lotus in front, followed by the blue Capri and then me and we were travelling at a fair rate of knots. Earlier I had noticed the lower part of the Lotus right front wing was flapping about a bit. Suddenly the front wing came off..... It went up in the air a good 30 odd feet , spinning round and round and then fell to earth right on top of the blue Capris bonnet and over the roof before shooting up in the air again !!!

It finally came to rest somewhere in the left hard shoulder and I can still see Lotus driver walking back up the motorway with that front wing under his arm..... He threw it in the boot and we set off on our way again.......

Those were the days !!
