I'm looking at buying a 2 door moggy as a bit of fun, idea being buy one for around 1k to 1,500 then over time update with better brakes/engine suspension as I'd like to use as a way of teaching my son plus cheaper end entry into a bit of motorsport, namely drag racing and hill climbs. I've run american V8's for years in drag racing but fancy something a tad different now.

What I'd like to know from those in the know re moggy'sn is will 1,500 buy anything useable? Also what is the easiest (without moving the bulkhead) engine upgrade for the Minors.

Thanks

£1500 is getting to the low end of worthwhile these days, although you can still get lucky from local newspapers etc.

The owners club has good advice on engine swaps here:

I know that there was a successful club racer/hillclimber with a Fiat Twin-cam engine fitted, without too much bother. Great Q-car.

One point, some engine transplants will make pretty much a non-starter for Hillclimbs. If the engine was not fitted originally then it goes into Sports Libre class. More info on Uphill Racers.

This one's alright, although that sill capping could be hiding a multitude...http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-page/174025/1967-morris-minor/

Are you planning on teaching your son to weld ? hehe

Engine transplants as above, but something light would be appropriate, K series with a type nine being my personal preference in a small car

Anything non-A series will rule it out for most Hillclimbs or Sprints as I said. But MX5 would be my choice, engine & box together. A K series is OK but you'll need adapter & clutch etc. All of which will be more than you can buy a MX5 driveline for, let alone the K series itself.

Now, as any fule kno, the Minor was originally designed to take a flat 4 engine.
Soooo... I reckon the best bet would be a Honda Goldwing engine. If you went for an 1800, you have 6 speed sequential gearbox, shaft drive and a screaming 6 cylinder noise! About 140 bhp, water cooled.... should fit easy.

A Triumph Rocket 3 lump would do the same and take up less space. Huge torque, too. The Wing has the advantage of reverse gear possibilities.
