Ok - I know this will sound strange, but I have a "factory built" kit car that the owner before registered as a 2009 car and I want to have it registered as a 1955 car. It is a replica Porsche 550 Spyder and I can't get it MOT'd as it has no door handles, reversing lights, fog lighst etc. I have heard of other people importing them and having them registered as old cars.

Can anyone offer advice or help?

Many thanks

Welcome to the world of SVA and the minefield that is kit cars. I am guessing you bought this 'cheap' as it 'just needs finishing'. Looks like you may have just found out why it was cheap....
You can't re-register a car already registered as an older version. Wherever you go from here with disguising your car's identity (bearing in mind it has already been registered) will put you the wrong side of the law. Sorry. Have a read of the rules on Single Vehicle Approval.

KJAM you do have some avenues open to you but be careful how you follow them. First, larrylamb11 is correct is saying welcome to the world of SVA type approval, plus, do your homework before you contact SVA for type approval.

1. If the year of production is different from the 2009 registration [due to UK importation?] you may be able to go down that route for approval ensuring you have the correct year of manufacture.
2. I would be very surprised if you'll be able to secure 1955 registration, ala original 550's, unless you have clear evidence to prove that your car was manufactured in 1955.
3. Subject to SVA sign-off, why not just buy a period plate and change the current registration?
4. Contact a Porsche Spyder replica club and discuss this with other members, particularly if other members have the same manufacturer model as you. Try DDK Online.
5. It is not unknown for owners to 'prepare' their car for an MOT, and then undo the 'preparation' work once an MOT is issued.

Personally, I see no problem with any replica having reversing and rear fog lights fitted. Many road going originals had them fitted with lights omitted only for the pure track bred cars.

you possibly need to give more details or contact DVLA with all details required

it might/could/possibly be that the PO incorrectly registered it as a 2009 car or it could be correct as a 2009 - depends on (age) donor components and kit - is anything thing on the car remotely as old as 1955 (!?!)

Porsche Owners (or like) club/members/owners may be able to help you - if they're not too badge concious and/or snobby (not all are)

some kit car owners will know a lot of detail on the subject IF you give them FULL details but many kit car owners will only know a very little about their car

lots of 'pub wisdom' on such subject so check and cross reference your facts from all sources as you should do with all information - unless you're a jurno of course biggrin

ETA: my remarks are sperate and don't relate to two previous posts especially last one as I was still typing as it was posted

I don't think reversing lights are in the MOT, but I understand the point about lights and other fittings.

Unless you have some proof that it shouldn't have been registered as 2009 because it was actually built in 1955 I'm pretty certain that you can't do anything unless you 'make it disappear' then acquire the identity of a genuine 1955 one and pretend that you kit/replica is an original, this would obviously not be legal but even if you were prepared to do it it's extremely unlikely you could get hold of a reg doc, chassis plate etc for a real 1955 Porsche Spyder!

Did it use parts from a 1955 car? If it has enough parts from then you might have a chance but otherwise you're stuffed so just bite the bullet and add the required lights and handles and if it makes a difference to you, buy a cheap 1950s reg.

V8250 - changing the reg number doesn't change the year the car was registered, it might look more authentic but it's still on DVLA & VOSA as 2009.

I did not state it did. Please refrain from mis-interpereting what was written.

Hello Nigel, it's always a difficult one with kit cars. Some of the clubs mentioned will turn up noses to 550 replicas but the chaps at DDK Online are a very helpful bunch. BTW are you at Blenheim on the 23rd beer

OP, have just come across this link. It may be of help http://www.speedstersandspyders.org.uk/a-z-guide.h...

Wow - really appreciate the help and advice guys.

The car is a Chamonix built in Brasil. It had additional work done on it by Becks in the States and then was imported to the UK. The owner who imported it had more work done and had it registered as a 2009 car. It is a lovely car and is well made. This is it if anyone is interested http://www.550spyder.co.uk/index.html

I will study the responses and take your advice - thanks so much. smile

I don't know the details or the law, but if it was registered in 2009 as a 2009 car it must have been checked through an SVA or equivalent to gain the registration. On that basis it should have had things like the fog light (I've no idea about door handles) to pass the SVA so maybe someone has since taken it off to make the car look more original.

Hi, oh yes some clubs will be very scornful but some members (or clubs) may be helpful

I realise about the extremes, we had a PCoGB (£250k?) replica on the club NEC stand years ago and I know of kit versions made in Northampton using (80s) Skoda engine and parts (I thought I recognised the dials as I owned three new Skodas in the mid-80s when the Sun reading sheep would take the mickey out of them constantly)

this car seems even more complicated now being an import

no mate, I don't like static shows especially when they're not car shows smile

the only proper time to have your car parked is in a country pub car park whilst you're inside enjoying a good quality British real ale (or liquid of your choice) biggrin

Why do you think it should be registered as a 1955 car? Your weblink states "550 APY is a Chamonix / Beck 550 Spyder. Built around 2004 the car sat somewhere for a new years before it was imported into the UK and registered in 2009."

Maybe take it to a MOT station that reads the new regs, nowt about front doors?
"A rear door that cannot be opened from the outside using the relevant control is a new reason for failure."

I fear OP has bigger issues than door handles and fog lights to overcome on his MOT. If it's been registered as 2009 MY, or even the stated 2004, it will need to meet modern emission standards. If its running anything like the original carb set up for a 1955 car, this will be a long shot, and that's ignoring the absence of a catalytic converter. If instead it has a modern engine set up like the current VW or Subaru powered versions, then why the desire to register it as a 1955 model, beyond the nice period plate which, as others have indicated, is available by other routes?
