Which Mercedes pre-war racer do you think this model is of?

I bought this at an antiques fair yesterday - couldn't resist it. It's 26" in length and the body and driver are carved from wood (body is hollow):







I think it's supposed to be a W165?

W165 Tripoli. There must be several of those because my other half wanted to buy me what looked like a very similar one some years ago that she spotted in an antique shop in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset. I talked her out of it.

I don't think it's a W125 - it has a single front grille like the W165

I'm sure I saw that, or something very similar, on sale at Techno Classica a few years ago. I can't remember the price, less than Euro75 I think.

I think your right seeing that model on some pictures.

GTRene got it right, cos it's even got the right race number.

Because these models are highly stylised, it could conceivably be a W163 which was the 3-litre supercharged GP car for 1939. The W165 was in effect half of one of these, to the then current Voiturette formula.

Nice model, but without wanting to be a curmudgeon, probably one of hundreds that just came in from China/Romania or some such.

I don't think it's Chinese etc - it has some real age to it (unless they deliberately did things like fitted old spoked pram type wheels to it) - I'm not a bad judge of such things, and the rust, dirt etc don't smack of faking... Also the driver seems a bit too well done an "European"...

Got one too in the dining room, isn't the body made from resin or similar? with metal spoke wheels and rubber tyres.

It might be resin, some of it feels like wood - I don't really want to start scraping it to find out... It's fairly heavy. Yes it has spoken wheels like old kids toys/pushchairs and rubber tyres. The chap I bought from was pretty clear that there were others - don't know how many though. I like it anyway...
