Hi, i have a mk1 golf gti that im THINKING of selling. It has only had 4 owners (2 familys) is completly standard even down to the tape deck,parcel shelf,alloys,number plate etc. Its mars red with a mountain of paper work including bill of sale from 83, every service stamp,mots etc. its not perfect but very tidy but i have no idea what to advertise it for? seen them going from 1500+ so dont really know what to advertise it for and not a fan of ebay auctions as nothing seems to make its value? any ideas???? 
Your post got me thinking of my VW's, one of which was a llasa green 1983 Jetta GLi (the saloon version). I had a look on "how many left" and it seems that there are but three left in the UK. Now that is a shame, since they were such a practical family car with four doors and a huge boot.

yeah thats what i thought! missus wants it gone now as we trying to buy a house but my point is its only going to increase in value so worth keeping for a few more years espially as it has silly amount of history to go with it! cant be many left of this age with every stamp,every mot,orignal sales reciept etc.

Not sure how much it will apprecaite in value from here to be honest. If it's very low miles I think it might but I think to get a lot more money than you would get now you'd have to keep it for a looooong time....these cars have already gone up in value.I'd check out the specialist Golf Gti forums. The way to make the most money out of a car like this is to advertise it at a highish price and be patient...at some stage someone will want it no doubt. At least with a forum you can avoid all the eBay tyre kicking hassle....you will be able to tell how serious a buyer is first hopefully....if it's someone that has just signed up on the forum to reply to your car's advert you know they are probably a time waster but if it's someone that's been on a forum for ages they are probably much more serious.

I had a Jetta GLi ! Mine was a Mk1 though. Fabulous car! Did thousands of very rapid miles in that. Mine was also Llasa green I really rated the first generation GTis and had loads of Mk1 Golfs, a good smattering of Mk1 Sciroccos, including a Storm and a GTi and that Jetta GLi. I ran a Mk1 Golf as a sleeper for a while too, it was a 4 door GL auto in metallic red... I transplanted all the mechanicals from an 1800 GTi into it, converting to manual, the lot. I kept the auto wheels as they ran chrome hub caps but took wider rubber..... it gave absolutely no clues as to what it was from the outside and was a LOT of fun! Surprised quite a bit of more exotic machinery!! I really loved the 1600s too, their buzzy, angry, engine pick up and the gear ratios were spot on... happy days! vixen1700 said:

I can't understand why these are still so cheap. Perhaps because there are plenty still about, but straight original un-Maxed ones aren't so easy to find. I bought a very smart, original black 1.6 about eight years ago, paid £2500 and I shouldn't think I would even get that back for it now.

OP, you say you car is in good condition, 4 owners etc, but what condition is it in? Has the rear hatch got any rust? What about the arches? Have you removed the plastic covers as they are a trap for moisture and rot from the inside out. Has it got a sunroof and is there any rust in that down the drainage channels?
With cars of this age having few owners and low mileage is great, but in reality the value is on condition. Without knowing that it is very hard to give it a price. However, presuming it is in ok condition then I would be looking for £2.5-£3k for it.
