Old Car Hand Pump?

I have got an old hand pump made by Ernest H. Hill in Sheffield and it's called 'The Sphinx'.
It's made of brass and looks very old.

Anyone got any idea what it would have been used for, is it for bikes or cars?

Yes! very similar indeed. Nice find.

It seems to have lost it's wooden handle somewhere along the line and whatever it's supposed to sit on too but other than that it's in good, if slightly green, order.
