Not sure all the records are on the web, FOC.
Post 1974 (ish) try the DVLA, we did get a list of V5's for the wife's A7.
Before that, depends. The original registration was recorded in the county records. Most survive, some were bomb damaged, and some pulped when it went on the computer. Some of these records are now in the archives.
So the first step is to find the issuing county.
The letters give the code, better at the bottom of this site http://www.newreg.co.uk/number-plates-search/ is "app" that gives the county and year range. So you can now write to the county archive to find what car it was on first. There is also the http://www.kitheadtrust.org.uk/vehicle_records_5.h... that may be able to help.
The problem is what happened in between. Did the car/reg move counties?
If the car is "cherished" in some form there may be a club with records, if all else fails try google, the A7 came up in a discussion forum (it had had a Ferodo boat body on it). For instance the Aston 8 FPK comes up with a reference to the 1958 LeMans and the Tourist Trophy Race. "PK" is a Surrey plate.
My Alvis was originally registered UU666, so a London number in 1929. The car is listed in the Vintage Alvis Register list of the early 50's. The guys who have had the car since about 1960 are still in the VSCC/Register. In about 1970 the car was tired and dismantled and the registration moved to a Aston. Since then the DVLA list it is as being on a volvo. The bits were re-assembled in 1980 to give my current car.
