Any idea what this is/was?

I came across this old trailer in a wood on a site of an old WW2 airfield. Just wondered what it was? The serial plates are too worn to read but there is the number printed on the side as can be seen.

The front wheel is very well engineered for just a trailer?

Its a commercial trailer unit ! the mechanism on the front is the steady wheel.
Probably something from the old days of British Road services or similar.

U.W. stands for unladen weight. Looks like 1 18 2, 1ton 18cwt 2lbs?? If those numbers are correct that was a heavy trailer. Probably carried something substantial - bombs maybe?

I'll see if I can find any old photos of the airfield with any of these being used. All the roads to the wood/ ammo storage were dug up after the war

It certainly looks like a Scammell trailer coupling. They were widely used for lightweight artics 50 or 60 years ago, with tractive units such as Bedford O-types and the like, as well as the company's own Scarab.

That looks like the front of an articulated trailer... like British Railways used with the Scammel mechanical horse

That footage was well found.

Airfield is Mount Farm in Oxfordshire. You can only access it over private land now but luckily one of my best friends is the farmer!
