The car looks like a prop from Gerry Anderson's fabby series "UFO". Knowing Mr Hill's reputation, the girl is either saying "Yes", or "How dare you!"

Isn't that Ed Straker's car from the series UFO? Like most cars in films and tv of that era I'd be surprised if it wasn't knocked up by Alan Mann's team, given the Zodiac hub caps that is even more likely.

NB, the cars used in UFO were LHD, it being supposed that by 1980 (when the series, made in 1969, was set) the UK would have switched to driving on the right. Mr Hill appears to have a RHD version of something similar.

Yeah, this was before it was modified for the series. That girl from UFO is beautiful. Bet she looks like my mum now.

Beneath the aluminium bodywork was a modified Zephyr -Zodiac Mk IV, fitted with an Escort engine and gearbox.

Later in it's existence it was owned by DJ Dave Lee Travis

Query: might the woman with Mr Hill be Gabrielle Drake, who played Lt Ellis in the series (complete with purple hair)? I haven't ever seen a pic of her with the hairdo shown in the photo above, so I'm not sure. Another phacktoid: her brother was cultish hippy songster NIck Drake, who sadly killed himself in 1974.

Just think: we were supposed to have a Moonbase, flying submarines, and tinfoil clad space babes by 1980. Where did it all go wrong?

When I was a kid my dad used to drive us past a place that had some of the UFO cars and props in the front garden - I guess it was St Albans/Borehamwood/Redbourn way. Tell me I'm not dreaming?
