Hi I note that ball joints dust covers are inspected under the new regs. Does this apply if no dust covers were originaly fitted. Will I have to fit dust covers prior to my annual test in March?

I can't quote chapter and verse, but it is a general principle of MOT testing that if something wasn't required or fitted when the car was new, and isn't fitted now (which depending on the age of th car has in the past covered things like seat belts, ABS, indicators) then its absence does not affect the car's ability to pass the test.

What car are we talking about, and how old is it?

A 1967 Sunbeam Alpine. Just womdering if anyone has had a problem with this recently. I may just give the MOT place a call, I like my car to be properly prepared before presenting it but don't want to carry out unnecessary work.

Yes, if you have a reasonable relationship with your MOT guy, as most long-term classic owners do, then definitely give him a call or drop in for a word.

Generally, if its not fitted it cannot be tested !!

^^ wot he said,my classic has rod end bearings on the suspension which is non standard and has no seals of any kind on them.

should only fail the test on excessive play of joints.but i agree a knowledgable mot tester is your best friend.
