Marmon

I found this great photo in a Nth London Junk shop in the late 80s. Been told its a Marmon possibly a 1928 Model. I have often wondered who, where and when.
The Registration no is a London issue i believe and that could be an AA badge above the no. plate. Surely very few were sold here.

Philip Marlowe drove a Marmon in one of his early appearances in a Raymond Chandler short story. He was fairly down at heel at the time.

Marmon were produced from 1907 to 1931. The last one was a V16 8ltr!! They were based in Indinapolis.

These are such rare cars especially in the UK

This one was subject to a 100k resto back in 78 and hasn't been used since. Totally mint and beautifully finished.

What does down at heel mean? Is that poor? Not being rude. Just curious.

Down at heel means, yes, you're a bit financially disadvantaged.

A Marmon won the first Indy 500.

Literally your shoes are worn out and you can't afford to have them re-heeled, practically, you're skint.

The Marmon looks like it has design cues from the style at the time and would look to be late 20's. Chev changed their wheels from wood spoke to steel disc in 29 iirc.

Marmon stopped making cars pre WW2 but the company is still there and these days forms a large chunk of Warren Buffet's empire. There are a few companies {Frazer Nash is another} where the company carried on for many years after it gave up on car manufacturing.

Marmon in France = 4WDs and army lorries. No connection I assume - although I did get excited the first time I saw one advertised in a local free paper.

The only Marmon I have seen is from 1928 and that has wire-spoked wheels, so I would think this must be a 1929 or 1930-ish model.

Thanks for all the replys. When i get a mo, i will contact the AA to see if their records go back that far. Im very interested to know who and when.

Interesting that it is now Warren Buffett owned. I worked for Kangol in the 1978/86 period and Marmon bought them and split it up. Kangol became just the fuffy hats bit, Our bit (Seat Belts) was restructured and sold on at a profit. It was owned by the Pritzker brothers. I met one of them one day. Cheerless man who lived by maiing money rather than being interested in how it was made. Not a world I would want to inhabit (except of course for the bank balance!)
