We Saved a very original early 1972 built one of these Very underated Sports Saloons the other day and im having some very very fond memory's come flooding back.
. In 1972 my best pal at schools Dad bought a new K registered beige coloured one. He was a Doctor ( a very good Doctor ) and a really lovely guy and had a practise in Chingford. He very nearly bought my Late Dads Hemi Challenger, but didn't think that his patients would approve !

He probably would have been a keen BMW 3.0 SI owner if they hadn't of been £5,000.

He was also the Doctor at track events for The West Essex Car Club and I can vividly remember some great drives down to Lyden Hill in Kent and up to Sneterton in Norfolk. He was aparently at Lyden on the day that Sir John Gott, sadly had his fatal heart attack at the wheel of his Big Healey.
Doctor MB, ( wish I could name him ) exchanged that 35S in i think 1974, for a new N registered light Metalic blue Audi 100 saloon, nice car but not a patch on that Rover.

Sitting in our newly acquired S , I can vividly recall his hands at the thin rimmed steering wheel of his one in the 3 o'clock and 9 clock positions with each little finger to the outside of that wheel and also the almost hidden shin bin on the drivers side.
Dr M B very sadly lost his Wife at X mas 1975 and he trajically died of Cancer in I beleive 1977, he was probably only 50. I still think of him fondly.

Nice story, glad you have saved one smile A 3500S is the only car I can say I HAVE to own in my lifetime, after my grandfather gave me a book on Rover P6's when I was younger. Enjoy it!

In fact I've just looked on amazon to find out who wrote it, and it was updated and re-published last year, James Taylor is the author. Fascinating reading.

Lovely story if somewhat sad towards the end. I've always fancied a P6, I think people forget that Rover made some fantatic cars. In fact they made great cars to the end but the older classics were brilliant

Oh and just to add, who has not just been on Car and Classic having a look in the adverts biggrin

At the age of 28 I wanted to buy my friend's lovely white/tan roof 3500S but I couldn't insure it for love or money, even with a clean record. In 1994, at the age of 44, I bought a beautiful one owner, low miles, 1969 Three Thousand Five and insured it as a daily driver for £140! Like a fool I succumbed to pressure from a pal to let him have it when I left the UK more than 10 years ago. He still has it and I could cry when I look at this:

Nice plate too for the colour combo! I'm at that cross roads with our mini, keep it and pay to keep it in top shape or sell and regret in 10 years. At least you have the advantage of it being with a friend so you know its looked after and still used

Double take time. That is identical to the Three Thousand Five that I had from 1989 to about 1997 ish. One of the best cars I have ever had. UPN774H - I wonder where it is now?

In the mid to late 70s, the Police in Chingford were running at least one Dark blue 3500 ( I was thrown in the back of one late one night when they accused me of pinching my Own push bike ) .
We're the Police ones all Autos ? Or did they have S manual versions as well ?

Met my wife through one of these cars
There was one in her garden that she wanted rid of
Been crashed, rusted out, dumped
Arranged for ithe main hulk to be dispatched to its breakers
Swept up the rest and put it in the bin.

AFAIK they had both

(others will disagree with this) I was advised by my mate to buy one with PAS as the non type were a bit see-saw to steer, after test driving a couple I saw what he meant and got one with PAS

you do have to tell your passengers to allow the doors to drop shut under their own weight rather than needing to put any effort in at all to close them, boot lid is also a easy-push to close not slam

I found the fog lights a waste of time

if you're not driving sit in the back as it's even more comfortable there

I was a bit disappointed when I found the door capping only come in plastic wood finish

only other criticism I can think of is a strong crosswind will be felt, otherwise a lovely car to drive, own and repair

for me 17mpg around town, 26-28 on a good (not slow) run

mine had electronic ignition, electric cooling fan and fuel pump

watch out for lazy owners who neglect the inboard rear brakes

Hi,

I'm in the process of a total ground up restoration of a 1974 3500S in Zircon Blue.

Link to the thread I'm posting here;

http://www.classicroverforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2...

Had to have one as I've many memory's of central London bristling with these as they were the weapon of choice for the Met in the 1970's

Be warned that P6's can and do fall into the hands of some utter bodgers, so take very little notice of the external (cosmetic) panels, and look a lot closer at the condition of the base unit.

More pictures and latest progress report to be posted up next week

Should be done in 2/3 years...........;)

My second P6 was a V8 auto, rear brakes were making a funny noise....no pads! Pistons eating the discs...

funny you should put that I've posted elsewhere that mine was I thought perhaps Teal blue but was told I was wrong which was confirmed by this web site (assuming it's correct) so yours is the same as mine, Scarab blue- http://www.ruediger-wicke.de/P6%20production%20col...
