How to register a car with no id?

I'm looking to buy a pre-war with no ID. It has a chassis and engine number but has been off the road for 35 years.
I guess worse case scenario is the chassis number is on another car....?

How would I go about getting the v5? Contact the owners club?

Has anyone successfully re-registered such a car?

Dan,
Apply to the DVLA for what history they have on your car.
You need to complete form V888, and pay a fee.

Often you need them dating too, at least you do with bikes & I expect it's the same. Normally it's the owner's club who does this.

I should say the car is actually a rolling chassis with engine, I would want to turn it into a special. Not sure if it make any difference.

If it has a chassis number, then I do not understand the question. That is the 'ID'.

Pre war car, chassis number registration only; as now, the engine number was also noted. According to Wikipedia, VIN numbers didn't start to appear until 1954, although I thought it would have been later.

Quite a few owners clubs keep chassis number records, so they ought to be able to say if somebody else was also using the number. That would be my first port of call, not DVLC.

At least one make didn't even always stamp the identifying letter of a chassis number, you knew from the basic design if it was a B### or an M### so the M wasn't stamped. Now that can be fun if DVLC investigate your application.

Mate of mine has recently had similar trouble with an 80's pickup truck, bought it with no reg plates but chassis and engine number were present, he contacted DVLA to get the reg from the chassis number and they refused to give it to him under the data protection act ???
took him months of ringing, in the end he went to a local DVLA centre with the recipt (stating the chassis number) and they gave him the reg but only if he filled in a V5 aplication then and there (which he couldn't do without the reg number), shame all the local centers are closings .
