Insurance company recommendations for Land Rover.

Myself and a friend are looking at a 1973 Series II/III Land Rover and are trying to get insurance quotes.

It will be on the street in SW London and is £1k worth of vehicle.

Friend is 35 Im 34 and will be a named driver on it and its a 2nd vehicle, he has at least 1 years NCB and I have none (since dont need to have a car in central london)...

So far the cheapest he has found is £1k for 2/3k of millage and TPFT.

Can anyone recommend a good insurance company that is not going to charge the earth so 2 blokes can go buy a money pit to drive around in.

Don't know if this is still the case, but when my BiL had one years ago he insured it with National Farmers Union

Carole Nash gave me the best on-street quote for an SIII in SW London - about £125, on a classic policy.

NFU offer good rates on Landies, but may decline cover on a car kept in London. Try Footman James.

My grate friend ol' Breadvan has recommended FJ. If you have the patience of a saint, then give them a call and be prepared to wait!

It is truly shocking that such a well publicised company has such a woeful attitude to telephone systems.

Here are a few things which might reduce the premium:

- Add an older more experienced driver to the policy, perhaps a parent or uncle.
- Increase your cover to comprehensive
- Try an insurer that fits a black box which monitors your driving, such as Insure The Box

My first two suggestions are counter-intuitive, but often work.

Its now down to £380 (fully comp) for someone with no NCB (less than a year on his current vehicle) and myself for it parked up in London on 3k mileage limit.

We will try the other suggestions to try and get it down a little further.
