911T madness @ Bonham's

So there I was, all researched, prepped and psyched up for a bid on this honest-looking, matching numbers '72 911T:

Unrestored and not run since about 1997, so I (and Autofarm) figured that mid-high £20ks would be about right. So bidding opens at £30k and shoots straight up to £49k (inc premium & VAT). So either there's someone with a HUGE emotional attachment to this car, there are people out there who can't tell the difference twixt a T and an S or I'm missing something, big time.

Same story at Brooklands the other week. Skanky E Type £50K. Perfect XK150S £48K......
Even grotty Rolls and Bentleys made huge money. All very strange.

Most of the estimates were smashed. Did you see the Aston?
That's either a bonkers market, or some serious "come and get me" marketing from the auction house.
Personally, I thought the prices they put on the cars seemed about right, but everything is going stupid at the moment (except my Elan +2, which no one seems to want to buy at any price).

Actually, I thought the DB6 wasn't too bad - hammer was ISTR about £118k, which is fairly moderate by recent AM prices. I reckoned that some sympathetic work on the interior and paintwork would have yielded some very good results - my finger was hovering over the button on that one! Finally managed to force myself to stay on message - getting a classic 911 at hopefully not too horrible prices. I'm actually starting to think about what's going to happen to the 80s SCs…

I can remember a '69 911T I bought for £1,350 in 1984 and later sold it for £1,500 thinking I'd done rather well!

Best not to go there - that way, madness lies ;-)

Best I ever managed on a car was selling my Alfasud, bought for £1350 in 1984, for £2100 in 1986 - I decided to sell it after, when washing it one day, my hand went through the rear wing. Buyer didn't seem to mind…

Where do we think a nice (not perfect) condition but high miles (just over 100k) Bentley T2 should be?

Friend I know in Germany had one reimported from USA to restore. He paid about $10k. I thought he was nuts: seems not!

Reckon you should have known it was not your day when a Sierra Cosworth went for just under £20k. Sarah Ferguson XJS was nice though.
Isn't it a fact though that these kind of auction houses just attract loads of money which is probably down to their global PR machine.

Funnily enough, I said exactly that to my partner as that particular 1980s repmobile went through the £15k mark! Then a rather nice E-type went for £35k, which got my hopes up again, only to be dashed again. I don't mind losing an auction when I've had a bit of a play, but when the opening bid (absentee, btw) was higher than I thought the car was worth, then it's time to shut down the browser and open up the gin!

How much would i get for this today, its a 911 s 2.4 with external oil filler cap, it was turned into a track car in the 80,s, its got fibre glass front wings, bonnet, whale tail, bumpers, rear roll cage, bigger alloys and the engine is a 2.7rs, yes an original one not one made from parts, all been checked by experts, paid £5250 for it in 1999 from a ad in the autotrader, did not know what model it was until i checked the chassis number.

You really, really don't want to know, do you? (but I suspect you already do…)

I know how much it cost to restore and how much its worth, but if it was offered for sale as per the day i collected it, what would it go for, i suspect the engine is worth just as much as the car, thanks.

The Bonhams car is the subject of much discussion!

My car is also a '72T. It also works, has an MOT, is pretty solid and has had most things done. Does this make it worth £49k? Does it hell!

Not sure what happened with this car, reality certainly became separated from the individuals involved for that vital few minutes during this auction.

Oh actually scrub that, Derek Bell has signed my oil filler flap, so it must be worth at least £70K

I bought a 2.4 T without an engine or gearbox 8 years ago for £2800....sat in my garage for a year, coudnt find a sensibly priced engine, thought id done well getting 3500 for it ......had virtually no rust either (
