Hi, been a lurker but just singed up to the site as I need some expert opinion. I have a quick question to confirm my thoughts on a car I've seen.

It's a 1960s body shell on a modern 4x4 chassis where the chassis needed some rework. They've then taken it for an MOT where somehow it passed. The V5 still contains the 4x4 info and the car is on an age related reg based on the 4x4.

Forgetting that it never should have passed the MOT as at the very least several lights were not working and seat-belts weren't fitted, should this vehicle not be subjected to an IVA due to the alterations?

As this is no longer a true classic, could it be failed due to the body of the vehicle not matching modern vehicle safety standards?
Also, not a biggie but I guess if it went for an IVA, due to the chassis alterations it would end up on a Q.

Cheers,
Gav

Please tell me it's this one; I know I shouldn't, but, I rather like it.

Yup that's the one! Didn't want to list what it was in case I got slated for condoning the sacrilegious butchering of a Roller.

I thought I could spend the money on this and park it on the driver rather than trying to tart up the outside of our 1970's bungalow. Not sure my other half is in agreement however. smile

I think It's still a Bighorn legally as the body shell isn't part of the identity if there is a separate chassis.

I've got to ask though - WHY? it's not even going to go offroad, it's just a ruined RR that'll sound like a tractor.

if the vehicle has a separate chassis then you can do quite a lot body wise before it needs an IVA

just look at what the less scrupulous end of the land rover world does by retaining the chassis and axles of a pre 73 Series but putting all new bits on to make what is effectively a defender

I think you already know the answers to the questions you have posed - which makes one curious as to your motives for doing so . . .

Hi Hooli & mph1977, from the little I've read, if the chassis has been altered then this may not be the case as it's classed as a radically altered vehicle. I got this from DLVA pdf INF26. As to why anyone would want to do this. Not sure but as to why I am interested in this? I've got to somehow get one over on the neighbours with their new mondeo haven't I? smile

Restoman - I think you already have conjured up a hypothesis as to the motives for the questions I have posed - which makes one rather curious as to what you believe those motives are . . .

Anyway, it kind of goes like this.

1) I go to see a car which is advertised as having an MOT.
2) It looks like the MOT is a bit shonky and the car is registered as the donor 4x4.
3) I do some googling when I return and due to the altered chassis it seems like it needs to go through the IVA process.
4) More googling shows that their seems to be some flexibility on the IVA process.

So, before metaphorically walking away from the vehicle, I thought I'd post to see if I could get the answers to the questions that are causing me concern and from my original post, these are:

1) Whether this vehicle should be subjected to an IVA due to the alterations?
2) As this is no longer a true classic, could it be failed due to the body of the vehicle not matching modern vehicle safety standards?

I *think* it does need to go through the IVA process. As for whether it will pass given the age of the body shell, I have absolutely no clue.

Hi Rich, thanks for the info.

I'm now sure that the car needs to be IVA'd, so next step is to figure out how easy that'll be to do! I had a rummage through all the points covered and it looks like a bit of a minefield!

I think this'll be a question for the kit car forum.

Cheers,
