Tax exempt vehicle

I heard a strange story today regarding tax exempt vehicles. (pre 73)
I was told that to qualify for free tax, you had to have another newer vehicle paying full tax.
Does anyone know if this is true. It came indirectly from a member of the Surrey Constabulary.

Unless the rules have changed recently, that's not true.
I've had many tax exempt cars and its never mattered if I had a modern paying tax or not.
My classic car insurance did insist that I had a "normally" insured car to qualify though, so maybe this is where the confusion is coming from.

I have heard that one too and I know it was not the case in the past, as my lifelong friend had a Minivan which he used for his business and that was his only vehicle and tax exempt. I think the establishment might like to have it the way you suggest - but what constitutes another vehicle on 'Full Tax' anyway? - a stepthrough moped for under £20 or a Citroen Bipper for £30 or a Range Rover for £400+
Let's not even suggest it, lest they bring it in!

Talking of the Citroen Bipper - £30 VED if it has seats and glass in the back, £220 if it's a van, same emissions - now what was all that bulls hit about greener vehicles? That's an anomaly that wants stopping.

It's a load of spherical objects! Tax free applies to the vehicle and is independent of the owner.

Thanks for all of the replies. I did think it sounded like nonsense. It could be that they were confusing with insurance, it did come to me second hand.

I think the insurance is also a red herring. I insured my BMW 2002 through a classic car specialist. They wern't interested in what other cars I had. The premium was based on miles per year, what I was using it for etc.

good that you checked but the answers from internet/forums need cross referencing too, sometimes 'forum wisdom' can be at the same low level as 'pub wisdom'

they could have been but you now have two answers that confirm that you can have a classic as an only vehicle (guess how I know)

and so are the answers here, the DVLA will tell you about 'road tax' and the appropriate insurers (possibly not those that don't normally deal with classics) will tell you about insurance
