I am pondering what tools I should keep in the car to be able to deal with simple issues on the go. I include stuff like jubilee clips and gaffer type as "tools" for the purposes of this thread. What do people think is the minimum to include?

Mobile phone with number of my recovery service in its contacts list. I've done over 4000 miles this year in my '63 Riley and haven't needed it - yet.

Not a classic, but a bike-engined car so...

-Couple of zipties
-1/2 roll of leftover insulation tape
-1 small canister of instant tyre
-Old Leatherman tool.
-Bicycle folding multitool for the various allen keys and screwdriver sizes (probably the most useful thing of all TBH)
-1 Jubillee clip that'll cover just about anything on the car in size.
-AA card

That's it - mostly fits in an old sunglass pouch & the aerosol lives strapped to the fire extinguisher. Oh, and I fitted an LED voltmeter next to the battery isolator for peace of mind. £5 from ebay, well spent.

MG has a tool roll of stuff (MG branded one I had as a christmas present) plus cable ties, tape and a torch. Daily driver has an assortment of tools in a toolbox. I used a hacksaw and electrical tape this week to fix a coolant hose that someone had let dangle by the auxillary belt whistle My car had a wee over the school carpark which was slightly embarrassing...

Very illuminating, thank you all.
You missed the retractable pencil. At last week's GRRC track day at Goodwood that's what I used to fix an Alvis with a broken fuel filter.... Unfortunately, I never caught the owner's name so I can't ask him to verify. But maybe someone else reading the thread was there and can vouch!

Blimey you lot are organised... normally just a card with the recovery co. no. on it, quite often this will have expired or will be for the wrong vehicle tho'... if travelling further afield maybe some beer, cheese and a pack of chocolate raisins in case of bad weather.

If going for a week of touring about then a handful of spanners/pliers/screwdrivers that I know will fit, knife, hammer, insulating tape, cable ties, multimeter, chocolate blocks and, in the case of old Brit' stuff, spare points, rotor arm etc.

I think after spannering and running the same old vehicles you get to know what is or isn't likely to cause trouble. My recent MX5 purchase is probably the most modern and up together car that I've owned, despite that, in thirty years of motoring I've only needed recovery/assistance a couple of times - one Spitfire head gasket, problems with pattern ignition parts and a practically new Suzuki motorcycle that left the factory with a host of electrical faults...

Of course there are plenty of other times when I take vehicles out with known faults and pack accordingly rolleyes

Essential kit....
Optional kit for continental touring....
( not the motorbike, obviously. That would just be silly. )
