Having tired of continually buying our au pair end-of life one litre snotters, I shared the idea of buying a classic mini. Everyone in the Mini forum told me I was quite mad.

I listened to their advice with care. Tonight I picked up a 1993 Rover Mini Sprite Auto.

Driving it back from Kent, I was reminded what a hoot these things are to drive and how well they handle. Yes, they're small, flimsy and basic beyond belief in their equipment but, as I compared it to Morris Minors, Ford Pops, Rover P4s, Mark 2 Jaguars, Aston DB4s, VW Beetles, 2CVs - all of which were available in 1959 and all of which I have been lucky enough to drive - I was struck by what a revelation it must have been when it was launched.

I love driving my daughter's whenever I get the chance, she has a '98 Mini. Has a little more comfort than any of the older ones we have owned, all of which were also great fun to drive.

Enjoy yours!
