4000 Mile XR3i Cab Value
Discussion
A Colleagues of mines father has a mint 4000 mile D plate XR3i cabriolet locked away in his garage, resplendent in a white on white on white colour scheme with a white electric roof,Essextastic!
My colleague can buy it from his dad for £5000.
I think he couldnt lose at that price but what do the combined minds of the Pistonheads massive think?

£5000 is pushing it - buy these cars on condition not mileage.
Has it been sitting in the garage unused? If so you need to check it over thoroughly.
If it has been run on and off over the years it's possible that the owner has had little excuse to even service it - the CVH needs plenty of good, quality oil and regular flushing otherwise it will gum up. The cam is a weak point that suffers from oil starvation and gumming up will worsen that. Don't expect it to not be worn after 4,000 miles! The giveaway here is the clacking tappety sound. The rest of the engine is pretty bulletproof.
Give the electrics a good check but they should be alright if it's generally avoided water. Don't be surprised to find rust either.
I'd bite his hand off for a £5000 hatch but as dockertrigger says the cab isn't amazingly popular, your colleague can push for less. Cover it in waxoyl, look after it!

I Must admit XR3s arent my cup of tea at all particularly white cabs!
The cars described as mint and is regularly started and run upto temperature in the garage but not driven.
I guess its inlikely anyone would buy it to actually drive although I really dont see the point in trailer queens.
I might tell hime to leave it for a few years and see how it goes, his dad isnt going to sell it to anyone else so theres no rush.

If it's regularly started then it sounds like the owner probably knows what he's doing re: engine maintenance. The cars described as mint and is regularly started and run upto temperature in the garage but not driven.

I don't think anyone is going to trailer queen an XR3i cab, but if your colleague drives it and maintains it well then there's no reason why it wouldn't hold value.
£5000 is a bit much, although you never know in a few years £5000 could be a steal!
His dad bought it for £5k six years ago and says he couls have it for that if ever he wants it.
Ive never seen it but its described as mint and on its original (cracked) tyres.
As has been said, youll never see another 4000 mile one.
I suggested he ring a few classic dealers and get it underwritten if going to take the plunge.
I reckon theres an essex stock trader or drug dealer done well whod lose that for the villa in marbella!

Underwritten-get a price from a buyer for something before buying it yourself.
Sorry,I sell motorhomes so any cars offered in px we get underwritten by traders before doing a deal to bring them in.
I am in the motor trade and personally cannot see that working? A friendly trader may, advise you what they think it worth or they might offer to buy it from you? But what use (to them) of giving you a value for them not to do anything with it...and stateing it in writing, or am I missing something?Sorry,I sell motorhomes so any cars offered in px we get underwritten by traders before doing a deal to bring them in.
My thinking was if he gets a couple of ballpark figures from the trade first he'll know if he can then bale out of it to the trade in future if needed.
I know a ballpark figure from a trader today doesnt mean a firm offer of anything the next day but it does represent a gossamer safety net if nothing else.

Id go for it much the same as if I had the knowledge I had now 10 years ago I'd have bought an RS2000, RS200 or 6R4 15 years ago.
Having said that after a quick squint on line it does sound a touch too much.
The mileage and history would have to be bomb proof, unquestionable.
If it's his dad's then presumably he would be left it in the event of his death. Al investments are a bit of chance and waiting
